Basically im ready for a change from the 320d ES Touring, i want a 530d Touring.

Ive been looking around and spotted This One quite local that seems to be quite cheap compared to others on Autotrader. There are a couple of paint-work issues, which the dealer will correct, the base of the drivers seat is saggy, but not as bad as it looks in the photos. Other than that it seems quite good, the Panoramic sunroof is a nice addition and im unsure of the green/cream colour combo.

So, 143k Miles, FBMWSH, 1 owner... the only thing i can think of is that it hasnt got the Sat Nav option, but under £9k it seems a bargain to me, they have offered £4k for mine, which is low imo, but mine+£5k doesnt seem a bad price. Ive had a test drive and it drives very well.

Thanks for the suggestion, any reasons to choose that over the 530d? to me (who obviously knows nothing) its a very similar car, its slightly older, slightly less miles but, only half-leather, id prefer full leather seats. The car will be used for ferrying the family+dogs on long trips and holidays. Ive found the cloth interior in my 320d a nightmare to get dog hairs out of, i was choosing leather to make it easier to keep clean. Found plenty of others with full leather, i know nothing about MB so will definately try and find one to test drive.

Just personal preference really, there is something about that BMW that looks ropey to me, but i havent seen it so maybe not.

For 10k i just think the Merc estates are a better car.

It's not cheap at all.

That said, anyone buying a 150,000 mile diesel E60 with air suspension for £9k needs to have their head looking at, it's a ridiculous buy because it represents massive risk and nobody will sell you a warranty for it.

It makes about as much sense as buying an ES specification 3 Series. Oh wait..

What's the worse case scenario regarding the suspension? Can any preventative maintenance be done? Is it worth considering this in the price?

The problem is that with each new generation the 5 Series gets more complex. If it was just the air suspension then fair enough. But it isn't - there are just loads of things that have a 4 figure worst case scenario.

The engine alone is a significant risk - it's got the swirl flap issue, turbocharger failure, injection problems, fuel pump issues especially at 150k miles. Any one of these problems could give you a 4 figure bill. The injectors ALONE are £250+ each before labour and it has 6!

Then you've got iDrive - good luck when that has an 'Unknown Error', somebody on here had that on a 6 month old one!

The air suspension is actually not quite as complex as you'd think but pump failiure is again not uncommon.

The automatic gearboxes can give trouble with higher mileage. £1000ish to recondition, £2000+ to replace.

It only takes ONE of these plethora of weak points to give you a bill and suddenly the whole thing begins to look pointless.

There is a reason why an 07 530d tourer with 40k is nearly £20k yet an 06 with 150k is less than £10k.

You used to be able to buy a high miler and reap the benefits as long as you bought a model that dodged the big bill-points (ie a manual petrol)- I did - but these days even the petrol engined models have overly complex injection systems, etc etc. Our 07 plate example had 6 new injectors AND a high pressure fuel pump within the first 2 years of its life!

I really wouldnt run a modern BMW without a warranty. Sadly this means paying the premium for a low mileage car so that you can have a meaningful warranty.

Great information, many thanks. The dealer has offered me a 6months warranty, but i expect its one of those that arent worth the paper they are written on.

With that information, its probably about time i did a spec me thread, because ive not got a clue what else to look at. (Besides Merc E class that DiamondMark has recommended)

£8k is too much money to spend on a Saab, dont be so silly.

It's an E39 generation car with too much tarting to try and make it compete in a market where in reality it is hopeless. I'll give you them at £5k but £8k? lol
