6870 or 470 buying today

Going on performance the 470 just takes it so that's where my money would go, extra memory on the 470 can come in handy as well.

I bought the OCUK 470 card when it came up in the 'Today Only' a week or so ago. Coming from a 9800GT card it is stunning. It s also pretty quite and cool - so far.

Performance on stock 6870 is quicker.
It's quieter, has multi monitor support, it runs cooler.
New MLAA anti aliasing.

470 is quicker when overclocked. Physix. Runs hotter and uses up extra unnecessary power.

Performance from stock 6870 edges 470 and runs with some 100W less. Just think about that that's a 470 and one 100w bulb in ur system that's on all the time...

Although 6870 ain't worth £200 mate. Their RRP should be £170 and for that matter neither is 470 gtx.

Wait one more week and 6950 will be out. It will give u more options and probably for extra 50 quid ur going to have a 480 beater....

The reason why my recommendation goes to the 470 is becuase in some respects the 470 competes with the 5870.

I agree its hot etc... but that gainward looks good.

Also as it stands Nvidia still do tesselation better than ATI 6000?

The new ATI cards will indeed run cool and will be quiter no doubt...

But I took a quick look at the stream processors on the 6870 and concluded 470.

The OP should look at some reviews.

I think in truth the 6870 and the 470 are neck and neck.

I don't know what AMD is thinking with it's prices they have a chance to make Nvidia feel the heat but they don’t seem all that interested in getting into any sort of price war with them which is rather annoying.

Out of the two cards you linked…….tough one but I would be tempted to go with the 6870 due to it’s lower power requirements which should mean it runs cooler and quieter. What does surprise me is the warranty is the same on bother cards (2 years) normally Nvidia partners give a lot better warranties then this but it seems like the only partners that are offering decent ones are Asus (3 years) and Nvidia’s best friend EVGA (10 years).

Although i would say get the 470 in current situation i think the 6870 will improve more as drivers are released like all decent performing cards lately since you will probably gain 10% more performance if not a bit more once they are fully optimised for the card.

Can't guarantee anything with an increase in driver performance and even if there was it will be game specific and not an overall increase. Better value for money with the 470, the dual fan cooler will keep the card cool and quiet even when overclocked, the extra 280mb of extra memory will help with games that exceed the 1GB buffer, plus you get the option to use physx and cuda. The 6870 offers eyefinity and lower power usage.

I have been looking at these two cards and have concluded at £200 they are too pricey. At £175 maybe then and if that doesn't happen i'll wait for 6950\6970\580GTX.:(

That quite right - at £200. I got my 470 on the 'Today Only' sale when it was only £174. I thought at that price it was the right card so I hope I was right.

No brainer at that price point. GTX470. A 470 will easily clock to the same performance as a 480. It also has excellent DX11 performance and can run allot of games with 32xCSAA which look stunning and has TRSAA which again does allot for the image quality. Throw in physx as a bonus for those games that support it.

Basically its the most feature rich and best performing card in the £200 price bracket.

I agree with the above!

Just understand it's not the same price point, over 3 years an average gamer would expect to pay £40-50 more for owning a 470.

It's not huge, just something to consider.

My money would still most likely go on the 470 out of the 2.
