So how much faster than a 5870 and 480 is the 580 in games

Like many I guess I've been trying to decide if it is worth me upgrading from my 5870 to a 580, looking at techpowerup's summary it shows the 580 is 33% faster than a 5870 at 1920x1200 (my res).

I wondered if those figures included old 3dMark versions as well so I decided to do my own summary, this is at 1920x1200 as I couldnt give a monkeys about other res.

These are mainly techpowerup's results but I dropped their dirt result as it was DX9 for some reason and I swapped crysis for crysis WH, both of those results come from Anand.

So in summary in games, I think the actual figures are 580 is 44% faster than 5870 and 18% faster than 480:

44% faster than a 5870 is quite impressive. At higher resolutions it might be even higher.

I don't think the 6970 can do so much better. The specifications looks to be about 50% faster than a 5870, but you never get 100% scaling due to diminishing returns.

As impressive a card as the 580 is I wouldnt see enough of an improvement in the games that I play to justify moving from a 5870 to the 580.

If I'm getting 71fps in Dirt2 do I really need 110fps? Course not.

The 5870 chews through F12010 and Black Ops on my rig so it'll do for some time yet. I'd rather invest in a bigger and better screen at this stage.

Yeh I need to upgrade my Mobo, CPU, ram and Monitor before I even think of upgrading my GFX card. Its not like the 5870 is struggling :P

I have just done what you are thinking about (upgraded from a 5870 to a GTX580) so I'll let you know my thoughts as soon as I get home tonight...

Reasons: Had many issues with my 5870 (first ATI card in a long time) - driver problems/lagging in games/not the performance I was expecting etc.

I've been pushing an eyefinity setup so I'm hoping the nvidia surround solution will be just as good (be it hdmi instead of mini-display port).

Will let you know anyway...

Powda, out!

Your maths is slightly wrong ;)

But, yes, a massive gain over the 5870. Not so much over the gtx480 as 10% of the 18% gain is because the gtx580 runs with a 10% faster clock speed but this isn;t relevant if you don't overclock your cards.

Powda if you had those issues with your last card then the 580 will seem awesome regardless

And I agree with the rest of the guys the 5870 isnt really struggling, just I fancy a new toy :D

Hey powdaman, you can't do NV surround with only 1 card as it'll only drive 2 monitors, you need an SLI setup for that :(

Did you try a fresh install of windows with the 5870?

I was also really considering this (with the hype of the new card yesterday), but i sat down last night, played the games that i play, did the things that i do, and realised it would be a waste at the moment, ive only got a 5850 too, but if everything im playing runs faster than 60fps at 1920x1200, whats the point? The only game i have that would benefit is stalker pripyat.

depends what games you play, as a wow player the 580 performance boost is something serious.........hence why even this morning my wallet is itching :o

seriously? need SLI for 3 screens? THAT SUX!!! ive just spent £420 quid on something that cant drive 3 screens???

ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh

oops. I feel for you powdaman. That is the one thing that bugs me about Nvidia, needing SLI for 3 screens.

You're only considering average frame rates. The gain here is itself impressive, but most of you are thinking that the 5870 provides a comfortable average anyway, so why do you want extra framerate when you might not notice the difference? I was bored on the train back from London last night (understandable really) and was reading as many GTX 580 reviews as I could find. One thing that seems to come through time and time again is that although the gain in average performance may not mean a lot in 'real terms', there is a comfortable increase in minimum framerate on the GTX 580, too. On some titles this brings the minimum well above the 'uncomfortable' 30ish fps zone.

Use the money you get back from the GTX580 and get two GTX470s. You'll get better performance, support for three screens and two very overclockable cards for about £335!
The GTX580 is faaaaaaar to expensive for what you get. It needs to be around the £300 mark to be worth considering, and the GTX480 to be around the £250 mark

Looking at the results the 580 doesn't really give you that much more at the bottom end of the FPS that make it a worth while upgrade from a 5870. Pretty good considering the age of the 5870.

Saying that the 580 is a cracking card.
