Acer Aspire One D255 Review

NOTE - ALL PHOTOS HAVE BEEN ADDED AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST!

Ok so this is my first review of anything, except games for college assignments but that’s different.

Received the netbook this morning (30th December 2010) and straight away stuck in the battery and powered it up. First impressions were that it was extremely small, somewhat smaller than I had originally anticipated but it does looks great.

After installing updates for just under 30 mins the netbook was ready to boot, including the mass amount of acer bloat which was already on the device, like small games available from the Acer Arcade Gamezone – all that has now been wiped.

Specs

CPU = Intel atom N550 (Dual Core) 1.5GHz 1MB L2 Cache
Only recently being implemented into netbooks

Memory = 1GB DDR3 Memory
Step up from the normal DDR2 memory available in the majority of todays netbooks

Battery = 6 Cell Li-Ion
I think this netbook can run for about 6-9 hours of web usage with lowest brightness settings and wifi turned on and connected.

Storage = 250GB HDD
So there is loads of room for documents, music and photos when you on the go.

Webcam = I think it’s a 0.3MP Webcam but im not that sure so make sure you look into this before purchasing if you want 1.3 instead of 0.3, makes no difference to myself, ill only use it for conference calls on skype.

Windows 7 and Android = Dual boot is optional and can be de-activated
Upon first startup from out of the box you cannot access android until it has been activated – after windows updates – I will look into this feature tomorrow when I get a chance.

Resolution = 10.1” LED Display = Maximum of 1024x600px
Normal size for a 10.1” display and looks crisp

Netbook Itself

The actual keyboard is smaller than what I had seen before, well ive used the apple Bluetooth keyboard briefly and I thought it was tiny compared tomy g11 but this is small. The keys are a decent size and you can type reasonably fast upon it, no flex from what ive been typing to far, seen as though this is all being typed on the netbook itself.

The touchpad is great, it’s a breeze to get used to something which I was considering not using and just getting a small wireless mouse but I have now turned back on that and consider jut using the device for what it was intended for – portability and easy access to emails, internet and word processing. Touchpad is multi gesture enabled so its 2 finger scrolling, something which you need to get used to if you’re a first timer – secondly there is a scroller bar at the side of the touchpad area which is what I personally prefer to use as its simple, and very responsive and works straight away. Again with the mutli gesture, you can zoom with 2 fingers, or hold one finger static on the touchpad, and move another finger horizontally or vertically for other scrolling options, something which I hadn’t seen in reviews which I had looked at on youtube. There is also only one button for the mouse buttons, which is devided into two sections with no split in the middle, so pressure can be applied to either end of the button for the desired outcome, but not in the centre of the button.

Task Manager

I looked at a thread on OcUK which was posted to help people reduce the CPU usage of unwanted processes inside the task manager. Upon first boot I installed CCleaner and removed unwanted programs of which seems to have made no actual difference to performance only HDD space but I don’t mind.

Here is a screen shot of my cpu usage which when the device is static and you are not touching anything or have anything running, the usage is 0-2%. When using the touchpad It goes up to a maximum of around 11% which of around 20 seconds it seemed to fluctuate from around 3%-11% depending how long the touchpad was being use for.

All is well, as for my first netbook I am very impressed and would recommend this for anyone wanting something small, slick and fast for browsing the web, watching videos and certainly checking emails and word processing and probably all at the same time.

If I have missed anything out or if you have anything to ask about this netbook, don’t hesitate to ask :D

thanks, I was looking at this in the shops today and I am considering it.

No problem, its an excellent device to use, been using mine for most of the day to get used to it and install software like AV and WLE for mail etc.

£250 for a dual core netbook i think is a steal :)
