Spec me a cooler

I dumped watercooling over the summer at the same time as doing an upgrade. I grabbed an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 rev 2, as it seemed to be a very cheap, satisfactory, quiet cooler. It is.

I would like to replace it with something a bit better. The Freezer is just a nasty clip on fitting, I don't think they get enough pressure on the CPU, I'd prefer a proper mounting that goes through the motherboard.

The difficulty is going to be that I have 4 sticks of Reaper installed - meaning the cooler can't cover the RAM slots on a Crosshair IV Formula.

Ideally it'd be mounted with the fan blowing upwards, this would suit the airflow in my case, as I have 3 intake fans at the bottom/front and 2 blowers at the top/rear.

There's several high end coolers around, and I'm sure they aren't hugely different. I'm wondering if anyone in the same circumstances has found the right cooler.

My Zalman CNPS9900-MAX Blue cooler don't face upwards, but the fan does blow out air out around the sides from not having a full fan housing...

Plus it easily clears the first ram slots

+1 for zalman blows straight onto rear exhaust in mine knocked 6'C off stock cooler with phenom 1090t

well impressed here and dont cover any memory either ( does lock in nice and firm with amd clip too very hard work getting the lock on so no worries on pressure)

That looks just the job - it's called a MAX Blue... but it looks black to me... it's not got horrible LEDs on it has it?

I've read a review and seen pictures now, and the LEDs are just a glow. The review says and the pictures show that motherboard LEDs are brighter. So this is an option.

The other option is an Archon, assuming it fits a Fractal Design R3 which I have not yet checked.

I don't see a review directly comparing them, sadly.
