I have a disciplinary at work because i have been late a lot of times on the early shift  The new supervisor is a real dick and now he is on my case about lateness, we had four tube strikes and load of snow end of last year and i did not call in sick once. I often work through my lunches. Do you think that i have any chance of talking my way out of this one? Below are the times in minutes that i was late on the early shift.

06/09/2010 15
07/09/2010 26
09/09/2010 26
10/09/2010 36
20/09/2010 16
21/09/2010 38
25/09/2010 17
05/09/2010 16
08/09/2010 28
20/09/2010 22
22/10/2010 20
03/11/2010 32
16/11/2010 19
17/11/2010 39
18/11/2010 21
29/11/2010 57
30/11/2010 61
489 (15 hours)

03/12/2010 21
27/01/2011 28
10/02/2011 36
(1 hour 15min)

I would say 70% of the lateness is due to the pathetic unreliable public transport in london, but like everyone, i over sleep and forget to set my alarm sometimes. Anyone else have this problem?

...Can you not wake up earlier? Acceptable lateness in my eyes is 5mins or 10mins if i ring/text ahead.

20mins+ nearly everyday is quite poor.

Haha, that's brilliant. You must be a troll. I'd have sacked you by now!

Over sleeping is NO excuse whatsoever - you can't share the issue by saying it happens to everyone.

Once every few months, yeah.

That many times in a few months? No!

Look at it from his perspective, 16+ hours is a lot of time lost, getting on for two 9-5 working days. Do other people using public transport have the same kind of lateness records? If it was widespread, surely your case would be more defensible, but if others are managing to get around public transport problems he's obviously going to come down on you hard.

Sure, everyone else has this problem now and again, but you'd be talking once or twice a year, not fifteen hours worth of lateness in 2 months.

No.

The public transport in London is some of the best public transport in the world! I can't think off the top of my head of somewhere that it is better.

Holy ****, that is a lot of lateness.

**** happens, we can all accept that. However was it not possible to make different arrangements to get to work? Couldn't you leave earlier for work? Get another form of public transport?

On those days that you were late, did you work later to catch up?

i think blaming transport is fair enough but in my job i had to be there, ready to start 15 mins before so it meant getting there 30 mins before....

You need to get up earlier, sleeping in once or twice a year is bad but acceptable, but if you KNOW transport is bad you should plan for this and leave earlier...

it's almost like moving house making your journey time 20 mins longer and then always being 20mins late because why should you bother to leave earlier?! see what i'm saying...

I'm suprised you still have a job!

All i can suggest is getting a job with company with a sliding doors approach to time. I.e If you come in later, you stay later, you come in earlier, you go earlier.
