Nvidia pulls GTX 590 to March 24th

agreed^

Cheapest ati 6970 is 265 x 2 = 530 pounds, Cheapest 6990 is 550 pounds so its 20 pounds more for less performance and hotter temps...

Yes 2x 6970's would be better in all cases. I suppose a 6990 is only good if you want 2x 6970's but only have 1 PCIe slot. Like say a mini ITX rig

I'm not sure if the article is talking about the Nvidia release or just some kind of announcement. Either way I cant see why a day driver delay would make any difference.

what do they mean by next gen? is it going to be on 32 or 28 nm litography? if not, then it's not really next gen, it's more like two current gen gpu's slapped together in unholy matrimony

The problem being that the vast vast majority of all tiny rigs wouldn't come close to fitting a 6990 in terms of length/size anyway and noise in a tiny less well ventilated rig will be awful with the fan ramping up all the way.

Really the only reason I can see for getting 2x6990's is if you intend to go quadfire and then have 2 cards with a bit of space between, where as 4x 6970's will be a right pain in the arse. More so when you get "proper" 6990's, as in with triple slot cooling, 20-30c lower temps, almost silent fans then 2 custom cooled 6990's will be a heck of a lot less hassle and fit way easier than 4 custom cooled 6970's.

I think we'll see 6990's from MSI, Asus, XFX with daft huge coolers on that work pretty well and due to 590gtx prices(probably) there will be a bit of a drop in price and increase in competitiveness , cooler, quieter and £450 and they become really really good cards, now, meh.

The 590gtx does look like its got a "proper" fan, which even though its not designed for exactly how its being used, should provide much higher cfm for any given sound level.

The real question is why AMD again opted for a daft radial fan with horrible airflow when there was plenty of room to put in the exact same fan Nvidia went with, the only difference is a bigger hole in the shroud.
