More FPS on an older card?

Don't usually come here for help but this is something I'm finding really strange ...

Basically I upgraded my PC just before xmas. Had a dual core CPU and an AMD 4850 (512 mb). I upgraded to an AMD 965 (3.4 GHz) and an AMD 6850 (1GB). When I got my new GPU I had to buy a new PSU (I bought an iCute 500W) because I needed a PCI cable from the PSU.

Everything's been fine in BC2 - I run everything on DX10 on lowest possible settings. Last night though my 5 month old PSU decided to die on me. This meant putting my old PSU in (520W) and because there was no PCI cable it also meant my old 4850 had to go back in. This is the first time I've had my 4850 and quad core together.

This is the strange part though - I'm noticing a slightly higher average FPS with my 4850. (I'm running at 1920x1080 res with the exact same 11.3 drivers). I'm getting over 100FPS frequently with my old 4850 than with my 6850.

Was my iCute 500W PSU not giving enough power for the 6850 or .... ? (I don't know why it died only after 5 months btw)

* I got the MSI 6850 from here - not an overclocked version or anything. Both cards are stock settings btw.

Edit ...

Running Windows 7 64bit

iCute is a cheap unreliable brand. I would say it probably wasn't giving it enough power. Doesn't the 4850 use a 6 pin connection? Can't you use that for the 6850?

The 4850 is a plug and play job for me ..... There's no cables that go into it. Maybe if it was a 1GB 4850 it would need one - I'm not sure?

Strange, every 4850 512mb/1gb I've seen requires a 6 pin connection. Any chance of a picture of the card?

What model is the old PSU?

6850 should be about 40% faster than the 4850 (depending on the game) but definitely considerably faster.

Are you sure all settings were exactly the same? Maybe 4850 is using DX9 renderer in BC2 or maybe your CCC settings are not the same for both cards.

The 6850 should be capable of handling higher settings than you are using in BC2. It's quite possible that the 6850 has some sort of performance bug at lowest settings or the when using the DX10 renderer. When you get your 6850 working again, you could try upping the settings and switching to the DX11 renderer; you may find that the performance hit is smaller than expected and exceeds the 4850 at similiarly higher settings.

It could even be the case that your 6850 was not setup properly (driver wise). I was thinking maybe your faulty PSU was limiting performance somewho before its demise, but not sure if that's even possibly.

Are you seeing the same behaviour in other games?

Finally, have you tried turning off your hacks, maybe they are affecting performance somehow? ;)

Exactly the same settings. Dx9 causes me to get zoom lag in BC2 so I always choose Dx10. And in CCC everything was default.

When I've ran BC2 in DX11 for a good amount of time I don't see any difference (apart from failing hitreg for some reason) FPS wise.

When a new driver comes out I uninstall old and install new properly - there's never an FPS change I find though.

Haven't tried any other games yet.

No comment. :p

buy a half decent PSU.

Regardless of whether it fixes your problem or not, this. ;) a lot of these cards drop to lower settings when they don't get enough power, and often decide not to tell you about it, too. If it's an MSI card, it's most likely stock OC'd to begin with.

Any recommended PSU's?

I thought it was MSI but it's actually "HIS ATI Radeon HD 6850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card" (that's from my order history)

fairly sure bc2 switches through dx levels till it finds one the card works with.. although its nto so good at letting you know, hell it was telling me i was running at dx11 level on a 980gt lol

but yea most likely icrappy psu under powering card or youve changed a setting, 6850 should be better than a 4850

id buy a new psu, but before buying one ask on here there guys know whats what :)

maybe when u get a new psu u should run a bc2 benchmark first with 4850 then with 6850

Hmmm a new psu...something like...

So many options that would easily power that system. Never skimp on a PSU. Don't be shammed by one that costs more either. You can by a £50 PSU that's high rated and efficient and a £100 one that is totally useless. Afaik the 6850 only uses 127W.

There are many other PSU options of course, if you want to make your system futureproof. Tis entirely up to you.

You can always rely on good suggestions from these forums. People wont suggest rubbish. :)
