Sleeping problem

I've seen it referred to on here before, basically it feels like you're half awake and being held down but you cant wake properly and move for a few seconds.

Thing is I only get this when I stay at my parents house, every single time and as im back to avoid distractions for revision, this isntthe greatest thing.

Anyone know of any possible remedies as I do not fancy dying from lack of sleep daily while trying to revise?
 
It's sleep paralysis, and it sounds like it's likely being caused by stress over exams. You are very unlikely to experience it if you sleep on your side or front instead of your back. I will often get it if I sleep on my back.
 
Sleep paralysis. Had it the other day, horrible stuff. It happened around 15 times yesterday morning. It happens to me when my sleeping pattern is messed up and I end up sleeping for too long.
 
Sleeping tablets are not the solution you're looking for. Winding down more effectively in the evening and trying to sleep on your side or front is. If you do still get it because you can't sleep on your side or front and are still stressed, then the best thing you can do is just let it happen, don't fight it, it's just your muscles relaxing before your mind switches off.

But it happens in the mornings, when the person is trying to wake up.
 
I will not be popping sleeping tabs as I think that's dumb.

I dont think its stress related, it seems to be related to sleeping in my room at home for whatever reason. I've never got it in my own flat and i've had stressful times much more there than here at my parents.

Never thought of sleeping on my front or side helping it actually, will see how I get on with that. Thank you!

I get it only at my parent's house too.

Maybe your sleeping pattern changes when you stay with your parents?
 
There are loads of things that can cause this, I get it occasionally but not as much as I used to.

Causes range from irregular sleep paterns, eating late, stress, maybe even a different environment, waking late and suddenly, who knows.

Eat early, regulate your sleep patterns and try and reduce stress.

Its also quite common in your late teen to early twenties, its nothing to worry about but as you say, its not an ideal thing to be happening to you.
 
Sounds like sleeping paralyzes, it happens when your brain wakes up before your body does.

As I understand when we fall asleep the body paralyzes itself so that no damage could be done to it overnight (moonwalkers have this mechanism broken).

So when you wake up, that mechanism still did not un-paralyze your body.

My very basic understanding of what is happening :o

Happened to me a couple of times. A lot of people also see hallucinations when that happens to them (dreams collide with reality).

Don't think its anything to worry about, just normalize sleep pattern. In any case all it is, is a minor inconvenience :)

This used to happen to me a lot when I was about 16 or 17. I think its called Sleep paralysis syndrome or something like that. The cause for me was an erratic sleep pattern, and as soon as i sorted that out it basically stopped.

Mine used to last for a long time though so your fortunate to be only having it for a few seconds.

if you find it happening more than a few seconds, I have a tip for you. just concentrate on moving one part of your body, your arm for example. This will rapidly speed up your coming around time.
 
It happens to me sometimes and it's always the same, I'm awake, as in my eyes are open, but I hear footsteps, and then I picture a man coming into the room, just slowly walking towards the bed, and I can't move or make any noise, I'm begging myself just to move my finger or something because I know I'll wake up then, and eventually I do - it's really scary! It's always in a morning, broad daylight, usually when I'm absolutely knackered and sleep longer than normal.

I think its something about the chemical your body releases when your asleep to stop you acting out your dreams. A bit like the opposite of sleep walking, perhaps sleep walking is a lack of this chemical and sleep paralysis is too much of this chemical. That all seems reasonable and scientific to me, the part I cant make sense of is the demonic experiences people report while being paralysed. Every time it happened to me, there was a groaning noise in my ears and the feeling of a presence in the room.
