Why does FPS drop went using dual monitors in clone mode

Does anyone know why FPS drop in games when using 2 monitors in clone mode ??


Example
DIRT 3 using single monitor = 130fps
DIRT 3 using dual monitors (clone mode) = 85fps
 
i would have thought, in my noobishness, that the card has to output twice the data, it might be the same data, but it has to output it nevertheless, causing a drop in framerates...
