Hi guys, first post here so sorry for cutting the formalities and getting straight into the nitty gritty.
Two years ago I bought and constructed my custom build PC. Here are the components:
Case: Antec 900 Two
PSU: Corsair TX650 650W
Motherboard: MSi X58 Pro-E
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz
Cooler: Coolermaster N620
GPU: XFX HD4890 Xtreme 1GB GDDR5
RAM: Corsair XMS3 3x2GB DDR3 1600MHz
Soundcard: Creative Xtreme Audio
It has run fine these last two years, but I noticed on HWMonitor that the GPU ran at ~60C and the CPU at ~45C which were fine. But the IOH ran very hot at ~80C. I read into the problem and realised that it was inherent within the first generation of the MSi boards because they used bad thermal paste and didn't attach the heatsinks well.
So this was top of my agenda for this years annual check. So I spent most of last night taking the PC and components apart and putting them all back together. It seems to have gone smoothly apart from one hitch - the USB ports do not work. They provide power, but no data can be transferred across them, and had to switch to PS/2 for my mouse and keyboard.
On top of that, my fix didn't really cool down the IOH temperatures. And I now cannot seem to fix my USB ports so this is pointing in the direction of a new motherboard. From this experience I would never buy MSi again so I think I would go for a Gigabyte one as they are the best.
So I ask what would be the best alternatives to the X58 Pro-E on the market around the same specs and price range? Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 seems to be a good alternative. I am looking in the £100-200 price range (rather not the £200 end).
Also is it worth holding out for the next generation of motherboards? Although this one seems to support USB3.0, SATA3.0, 32NM Intel chips.
Is there any solution which I haven't tried to fix my USBs or does my motherboard really need replacing?
Finally what features does the GA-X58A-UD5 have that the X58 Pro-E doesn't?
Also what of the GA-X58A-UD3R? Does it have any major disadvantages over the GA-X58A-UD5 in my configuration.
I know I am a new poster and am coming in and I appreciate and thank you guys helping in advance. The GA-X58A-UD5 seems a reasonable price here so if it comes to buying a new one then you might be in luck.
