£350 - £400 Card gets owned by £200 beasts

yeah I've been keeping an eye on how well my xfire setup compares to single cards, makes me glad I went for a 2nd 5850 about a year ago.

At one point i was considering going back to a single card, but decided it wasnt worth it because it would most probably be a downgrade, probably wont upgrade till the amd 7 series and it's nvidia counterparts show up now.

I bought one a few weeks ago and was blown away by the performance.

I decided to get another to xfire.

They stomp over cards over twice the price :)

RAW Fps is not everything i had crossfire x with a 5970 and a 5870 trifire as it were and ive downgraded to a single 6970.

its got 2gb vram and games feel smoother on it at my res of 1920x1200.

The proof is all here.

Thoughts on this guys?

Thats all well and good but, had it not been for 32nm being canceled, the new gen would be basically 80% faster than the old gen and roughly on par performance wise with two of the old cards. In this case, two stock 5850's would be probably 10-15% slower than a single 580gtx, IF it was 32nm with more shaders, much like a 6970 on 32nm with more shaders as intended would be just about on par with 2x5850's.

This gen is odd in terms of value, normally you'd get, a 5850 at £200, new card comes in at £200 but its 80% faster, so when the EOL 5850's drop to £120, a 80% faster £200 6950 is actually awesome value and the 5850 really offers no improved value, just good deals for those with only £120 to spend. Thats the "normal" situation, again this gen, the lack of process change and subsequent spec improvement means the performance difference is 20%, yet the price difference is closer to 80%.

EOL last gen cards are awesome value this time around, but its an anomoly, not the norm.

The top end single gpu cards have always been horrible value, always, dual gpu cards from AMD before this gen have actually been awesome value, and the odd Nvidia dual gpu card has been good value.

lower fps than a single card is what i have found , had crossfired 5870's before my 6970 and the 6970 has a better min fps in any game i play . so more is not always better ;):D

Thank you for the your input.

My thread was about two £100 cards competing with, and beating cards over twice as much.

If you want to dispute that fact please contact the people that have reviewed
the cards.

like i said raw fps and reviews aren't the be all and end all.

You would have been better off spending you money on a single 2gb 6950 for a smoother gameplay experience.

I much prefer my single 2gb 6970 to my 5870 crossfire.

a single 6950 would have been cheaper too.

the only thing two old cards are better for is benchmarking.

I'm happy with what i have bought for 200 notes.

Have a nice day

Also remember,, theres no point having 2 6950 cards if you have a slow cpu. For example my [email protected] is bottlenecking my 6950 about 15-20% so if I got a 2nd 6950, there wouldn't be much of a speed diff, as my 1 6950 cant achieve full speed, let alone adding a 2nd 6950 in their

That chart shows that the 5850's beat it and for less money ;)

There's nothing in them, and there really isnt anything in it with costs, and when it comes to min frame rates (which is the most important for gaming) the 460 1gb's are better.

I do have a sneaky feeling you just wanted to have a little pop at nVidia, didnt you ?
