Considering the 27" Dell U2711

So for a while now I've been considering upgrading my current 24" Asus VW246H to a 27" Dell U2711.
It will be mainly for standard use. Bit of gaming here, bit of photoshop there. Maybe the odd bit of video editing.

I know I don't NEED it, but I have the money and the glorious IPS screen and 2560x1440 resolution are so attractive!

I have a few queries though.

1. Frame rates.
Will a single 5870 2gb be enough for the latest games? I do play games, but I'm far from a hardcore gamer and I'm not obsessed with maximum settings and eye candy. Medium-high settings are acceptable for me.

2. Physical size.
I am looking forward to the extra 3 inches, but at the same time I am concerned about it feeling too big. My eyes are roughly 2 - 2.5 feet from the screen, should I be concerned?

3. Dead pixels.
So far I have been lucky and I have never had a dead pixel on any monitor I have owned. But I know that IF I did have to use a monitor with even 1 dead pixel, it would drive me insane! Do Dell support a zero dead pixel policy?

Cheers chaps.

I got my U2711 almost a year ago and I've gotta say it's an awesome screen :)

As to your points

1. It'll be fine if as you say you don't mind knocking the details down a little from the top.

2. I replaced a 24" with the 27" and had the same worry as you before purchase but it's fine from a couple of feet away.

3. No dead pixels on mine as already stated Dell have a great replacement policy.

mikey do you notice any of the anti glare coating which people talk about giving whites a grayish cast ? ?

Ive just ordered one arriving tommorow, can let you know what I think then (going from 24" and in a very similar position to you it sounds like)

I wouldn't call Dells dead pixel warranty that awesome either. They will replace a screen with 1 stuck pixel, but not one dead pixel. I have a slightly older 24inch Dell with a dead pixel.

I just got a U2711 yesterday. Swapped out my old BenQ FP241W for it. I'm running a single (1GB) 5870 & I've played quite a few games on it since yesterday. The only games that gave me trouble were Metro 2033 & Crysis 2 (both maxed out). With some of the eye candy turned down they both run fine though & still look amazing in 1440P.

Great monitor. I'm very happy with it.

On Metro BTW, fully maxed out I got less than 1FPS! It didn't even register anything on the graph...

I have upgraded to the 30" version of this screen not long ago (Dell u3011).

1. I was worried that my single 5850 will struggle with the 2560x1600 resolution of my screen. To my surprise win 7 and Photoshop (main reason why I went for that screen) is absolutely fine on 2560x1600, to my even bigger surprise when I fired up Bad Company 2 and played it on the highest possible settings I was easily getting 30-40 fps  I wasn't expecting that TBH. Sadly I did not test it out with any other game so far, because I don't play as much as I used to. The next big test will be Battlefield 3 but until that time I should have a new GPU anyway.

2. I sit 2' from my 30" at first it was huge to me (was using 24" monitor before), but after few days it seems normal to me and I'm glad I went for it. I was forced to spend some time in front of my missus' 15" laptop today and it looked so tiny! Looked like mobile phone screen size-wise :) You won't regret going for big screen!

3. I'm not sure what's Dell pixel policy and I was a bit worried myself, esp with a big screen like this, but I am happy to report that I don't have a problem with pixels. Everything is perfect. What's more I just had my screen calibrated and it looks even better now!

In short: go for it!

I love the u27, its the pixel policy why I still keep the u24 too, if you have light hitting it the anti glare is a god send

Love the stand too, an extra you pay for with hazro

Yeah stand is nice and stylish and with the USB connectivity it has some nice handy options added. Also the OSD "buttons" are quite funky!

Prefer coding on my LP2475W though as I just dont think I need that much space for work!

For gaming though it rocks.

Received it this morning. Outstanding monitor.

The only negative I can see is the text/icons being too small in certain applications. Such as Flash, Photoshop, 3DS Max.

Can't believe I'd say this, but after a day of use I'm not happy. Everything is just too small. I am unable to sit back and relax in my chair. I constantly have to have my face right up close to the screen.

I currently have the resolution set to 1920x1080. Much better, but it defeats the point of having this monitor.

Will OCUK accept a return? Nothing is damaged and everything will be repacked exactly as I received it.

Try setting the text to a larger size (link in the change screen resolution window).

I have it at 130% (125 DPI). But this does not effect everything. Some of the text is larger but a lot of it is still small.

To be honest I'd rather just go back to my old monitor...
