Samsung S23A750D Connectivity

I'm really interested in the Samsung S23A750D 120hz monitor however I currently run two 580's in SLI in order to get me as close to 120 frames as I can get. The cards output on a DVI dual link cable but I note this monitor doesn't have a DVI connection does that pretty much mean that this monitor is useless for my needs?

My apologise if this has been covered before.

Pretty much yes. You will need a display port for that monitor to play in 120hz, as hdmi does not cut it and the monitor has no dvi. The way around it is possibly to buy a dvi-dp converter, not sure about this though.

The other way is to buy the 950d instead, which does have the DVI link

I'm afraid you are out of luck. Even expensive active Display Port adaptors don't give you the bandwidth required for 120Hz at 1920 x 1080 so that monitor is not really a good option for your current GPU.

Ah...i want / wanted two of these... now since all graphic cards at present as far as im aware only have 1 display port on them and 2 DVI that would mean that i would need to get another graphics card just to have dual screens with these monitors.

Uber Fail...no?

So this monitor is essentially useless with Nvidia cards if you want to run it @ 120Hz?

Seems a bit of an oversight by Samsung

I think I'm off now... I'll get the LGW2363D instead, and wait till Samsung releases a monitor WITH DVI and support for NVIDIA cars. I have no doubts that this monitor is great, but I'll be too expensive for me if I have to change gfx card etc.

even if they are the best monitors in the world a design oversight is a show stopper. i don't want 2 27" monster monitor on my desk i want 2 23" right now i'd need to update my graphic card as well, thats a + £400 bill

so £400 + £400 + £400 = £1200

i am not to interested in 3d on both monitors so hdmi i suppose could work, but i bet they will be some issues or something.

anyway i cant afford £1200 for this so its not an option. might as well go for something cheaper over the next 3 - 5 months that will come out

A real shame, not including DVI seems crazy to me, its a beautiful looking monitor whereas the 950 is a little too fancy looking for my tastes. Guess I'll stick with my LG for now.

Stupid question but I suppose then the only way to get this monitor running at 120Hz on a graphics card like (for example) the 6990 - which features 4x miniDP and 1x DVI - would be to use a miniDP to DP cable?

You can also use a small adaptor cable. This is sometimes supplied with GPUs. It's about about 6 inches long, connects to the miniDP of the GPU and presents a normal DP connector on the other end to connect a normal DisplayPort cable to it. There is a normal DisplayPort cable supplied with the SA750 so this works fine and there is no problem doing this. There shouldn't be any problem using a converter cable either but make sure you get one that's only as long as you need as some of the longer ones may have issues at 120Hz.

Yeah the MSI R6990 comes with 3 of those adapters:

MiniDP to DVI
MiniDP to HDMI
MiniDP to VGA (!)

But alas, not the obvious one. Annoying at best.

Dunno if it would work with this but one of my GPUs came with what looks like a dual-link DVI to HDMI 1.4 adapter.

The Samsung 700D is the same monitor without the fancy base, £100 cheaper and has DVI and HDMI instead of DP/hdmi.

I got it the other day, have to say its freaking awesome. Still not convinced by 3d, it does it well, tested a couple thinks like Avatar and Toy story, its noticeable and good in some stuff but downsides as well and in terms of immersion.

Anyway, the 3d works, though i think you need and there is a hack for using 3d with Nvidia drivers rather than AMD/tridef which is what its designed to use as standard.

Its got several 3d modes to handle various inputs, though for me powerdvd is doing a very nice job with playback and the screen automatically choosing the right 3d option.

In 120hz, its great for games, colour wise, its god damned awesome, against my older TN screen, a Benq 2420hbdl or something close to that, its stunning with the older TN screen appearing washed out and pretty awful while the Samsung has hugely better colours, far less washed out, far better skin tone, all video looks better, and the glossy screen makes everything look so much sharper and nice.

I got it for £300 + 2% cashback, wile the 750D is, around the £400 mark.
