I currently own a 30" screen running at 2560x1600 [Samsung 305t] for playing games & have used it for 2 years + however ive noticed games really struggle latelty and considering to selling the screen & using my 24" HP. i have the money to upgrade more often but don't know if i wanted to spend it.

i want your views on this to help me make my mind up

The benefit of selling:

Less upgrades
Save Money
Play New Games on High Settings for longer
could use the £600 selling the screen on buying a new Card later on
HP has better qaulity screen with better colours [H-IPS instead of S-PVA]

The Disadvantages:
less of an experience
Smaller screen & resolution 1920x1200 < 2560x1600
wont need SLI which bugs me (had 280GTX SLI previously)

Current Games Struggling
Starcraft 2 - on Ultra
GTA IV on - Max - bad port i know
BF3 - Most likely
Saints Row 3 - Maybe but doubt it
Mafia II - at some moments

My Current Spec is
i7 940 2.93ghz
6GB DDR3 1333mhz
570GTX 1.2GB
Asus DX 7.1
1000w PSU

let me know your views and ideas on this?

Why not run the games at a lower res on the 30” but have it set to not scale it up to 30” ?
I could never give up my 30” dell purely for the 2D side of things.

not a bad idea, ill give it ago but im pretty sure last time i tried it looked terrible i got a feeling this screen has no scaling so 1280x800 or 2560x1600 are the only options...

but ill check

Depends - are you happy using a 24" screen*?

*When answering please bear in mind that some of us are stuck with 19" screens

I THINK so but cant be sure, i could however use the 24" for a while and see if i do? :)

One GTX 570 is not enough for powering that resolution if you want to max out your games. Either get rid of the screen or increase your GPU power.

I run games at 1920 on my dell 30" native 2560 like yours. they look sublime, so don't worry about that side of things. I think you'll come to regret selling it, in all honesty! There's just nothing quite like using photoshop/lightroom etc. on a 30. I own two 30s and two 24s and they're all used for different things but my 30s get abused for almost everything.

That said, if it's going cheap then let me know :)

This ^. I do the same. Black bands make no odds in a dark room tbh.

I moved down from 28" to a good quality 24" for space reasons. It took a couple of weeks to get used to, but I think 24" is a good compromise between quality and size for the price. I don't really need 'pixel estate' too much - I just need to split the screen into two on occasions for things like coding, MATLAB, writing papers etc. and 24" (1920x1200) is very comfortable for me.

You dont know what youve got till its gone :(

Keep the 30, it will be one less thing to upgrade in the future!

As others have said just run it 1:1 in whatever res you want if the games are struggling.

edit

I only have a 24 inch dell A04 (love it to bits). I've never actually experienced a 30 inch screen...

I went from a 22 to a 26 and love it. I'd also like to eventually graduate to a 30 but the cost of them is steep, and it seems once you go above the 1920x1200 resolution, the outlay continues as you then start having to consider two or three gpu's if you want to run titles at maximum settings. At 1920x1200 I find that one gpu does that just fine, only a handful of titles can't be totally run to the hilt, and even then we are only talking about the highest levels of AA.

If the OP wants to game at high settings he will have to add another gpu. If you don't like the thought of that then forget it, sell the 30 and use the smaller screen.

I don't get any black bands, myself, since the scaling is direct ratio from native. most games have a 16:10 option these days, or 16:9 or whatever you're using.

ahh righto, I don’t scale mine at all. I just run them at a smaller res so they are in the middle of the screen, hence the black bands.

I went from a 32" tv @ 1920x1080 to a 24" monitor @ 1920x1200.

It was no big deal, I used to enjoy slouching in front of a mmo on the massive screen and it gave total war games a new edge. But other than that I didnt feel it was much of a downgrade.

Probably not very useful since the resolution of your screen is a lot higher.

I'd say for up close pc usage a 24" 1920xx1200 is an upgrade fro ma 32 1080 tv.

Yes there is a new found sharpness to the image which wasnt there before.

I did enjoy the SCALE of the 32" though. Lotro felt like a movie, in total war I could just about smell the gunpowder. Those games were improved, just by the size of the screen.
