Hi all,

Had questioned a few things over on the CPU forum, about upgrading from the following...

AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 2.80GHz / Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P Motherboard / Corsair Dominator 4GB DDR3 XMS3 PC2-1600C9D TwinX (2x2GB) Bundle

This was originally pre-overclocked, bought from here, but due to all sorts of issues I had to flash the BIOS and I believe the clock was lost.

Originally planned just to change the CPU, but looking into it, didn't seem to bring too much of an improvement, so then thought about making the jump back to intel and SandyBridge, something I haven't considered for a very long time.

Rest of the system would consist, hopefully of the following-

Seasonic 750w PSU
MSi R6970 lightning, if I can get it working, before or after RMA'ing.
Crucial M4 SSD, 128gb one most likely.
Have yet to make a decision on other HDs, either the Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS) I currently have paired with another in raid, or the 150gb Velociraptor I have and the 500gb WD Cavier black on their own.
Also have a Xonar DG, a bluray player and a DVD R of some description.

All in a Silverstone Temjin TJ-09 case.

Very Important - I will not be overclocking myself. I have tried in the past and had nothing but trouble with the attempts. Quickly realised that to me, it is not in any way shape or form worth the hassle.

Due to this, I had been looking at the MSi motherboards as they had the OC Genie thing, but not really knowing too much about it, I'm not sure its worth the bother, or if there are other better alternatives.

Use will be occasional gaming. Current games to play are -

Dragon Age 2
Witcher 2
Metro 2033
Fallout New Vegas
Borderlands
With a little bit of Global Agenda thrown in now and again.

If I go through with this, I will probably also be getting Deus Ex, Elder Scrolls 5, Diablo 3, Warhammer 40k space marine, and will need to pick up a copy of Portal 2 at some point to see what the fuss is about.

I like my RPG's and FPS games, although the FPS is more towards unreal tournament, and not COD or Battlefield, which are all the same to me, and boring.

Other than that, its really occasional internet surfing and some flash based games, music/movies are stored on a NAS, and I can move all the media stuff finally over to my media PC really.

Any recommendations?

The Z68A-GD65 (G3), and GD80 you will need to update the bios to the latest Beta Bios for the OC Genie to work properly. Just so you know. :)

Personally I don't use OC Genie, if you increase cpu voltage to between 1.30 and 1.35v up the multi to 45, and use XMP profile ram and enable it within the bios, disable turbo boost and change v droop to low droop, that will more or less sort out your overclock. :)

It's really easy overclocking Sandybridge, especially with the MSI Z68A series, I guess other brands would be just as easy.

My eyes kinda glazed over reading that, lol! Overclocking really isn't for me, never been able to get my head around it, and never been able to get it working properly.

So OC Genie is not as simple as I thought it was. What about the ASRock boards? In my searches I saw that these come with settings in the BIOS to overclock automatically?

Yeah it's buggy with the release bios, won't work properly unless you are willing to do a bios update.

I think the Asrocks have settings for 4.6GHz etc within the bios, someone with the board will know more. :)

With the Asrock Extreme4 Gen3 you can do it with one click, just pick the speed you want from 4GHz, 4.2GHz, 4.4GHz, 4.6GHz, 4.8GHz. Almost ALL 2500K and 2600K will do up to 4.4GHz with ease. And it's a fantastic board, brilliant layout, superb performance plus sexy looks ;-)
