A name probably not familiar to most people, but a serious pioneer of the computer age whose work still impacts most people today.

He was one of the creators of Unix and created the 'C' programming language with Brian Kernighan.

If you use any of the 'C' derived languages, you have this man to thank for his original work.

Rest in peace Dennis.

Bad times :(. It's pretty sad how everyone was so vocal about Steve Jobs death when this guy really started it all. iOS, it's BSD *nix written in C for gods sake. Ritchie really set the foundations for nearly all technology around us, so many consumer electronics devices are unix/linux based with C code coursing through it. Smartphones, TV's, Tablets, set-top boxes bloomin everything.
 
It's sad to see him go. I've still got my C Programming Language book from when I first used the language...
