These cards are specifically designed to handle the extreme overclocking which eager gamers and media outlets around the world have been waiting for. Industry-leading Power4 architecture and Twin Frozr III dual-fan cooling with innovative Propeller Blade technology brings together a solid power supply with advanced cooling technology. This results in huge boosts to overclocking potential and stability, enabling the air-cooled 6970 Lightning to break the 1GHz core clock barrier with ease. The Lightning series of graphic cards is designed to offer the ultimate in overclocking capabilities and is the superior choice for overclocking enthusiasts seeking to set new world records!

Inheriting the impressive Power4 architecture from previous Lightning cards along with improved components and design in four areas. The PWM module is twice as large as before and provides double the amount of current to the GPU. Memory has its own independent power supply using an 8-pin connector for minimum interference to greatly increase overclocking potential. The next-generation Proadlizer capacitor increases signal stability by leaps and bounds while CopperMOS, the industry's best MOSFET, provides the GPU with a large and stable power supply. Combined, these features provide ordinary users as well as extreme overclocking enthusiasts with a more stable operating environment and the best performance out there.

The all new Twin Frozr III cooling design utilizes the innovative Propeller Blade technology to double the amount of airflow compared to conventional fans. The airflow also covers a large surface to remove heat quickly and effectively, and when you add in twin 9cm PWM fans, SuperPipe technology, and the Form-in-one heatsink, the result is GPU operating temperatures 26°C lower than the reference board when the 6970 Lightning are operating under full loads. Fan noise is also 11dB lower in addition to having much higher overclocking potential.

The MSI 6970 Lightning graphic cards come with the latest version of MSI's exclusive Afterburner V2.1.0 overclocking utility. The utility not only adjusts GPU and memory clock but also manage the GPU/Memory/PLL(VDDCI) voltages to maximize overclocking potential. Thanks to Triple Overvoltage, the overclocking potential of 6970 Lightning is much higher than the reference board and offers enthusiasts ultimate performance.

For hardware enthusiasts, the MSI 6970 Lightning graphic cards come with exclusive extreme overclocking features. Apart from V-Check Points and V-Switch for monitoring and adjusting the GPU/Memory/PLL(VDDCI) voltages in real time, Dual Bios switches help to effectively prevent potential problems stemming from liquid nitrogen cooling. PWM Clock Tuner also helps to increase overclocking potential. All of these come together to make the 6970 Lightning the ultimate graphic cards for extreme overclocking<br>

The MSI 6970 Lightning graphic cards use top-quality Military Class II components including All Solid Cap for overclocking and full-speed operation, SFC for 10% higher efficiency, and 30% increase in maximum current, as well as Hi-c Cap with Tantalum core which boasts 8 times the lifetime of conventional solid capacitors. These high-quality components not only increase the graphic cards' overall service life but also enhance GPU stability.

Anyway how much better would this be than my 5870.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/292?vs=294

Going from a 5870 to a 6950 unlocked>6970 Crossfire myself, it's nothing massive, it's the average and minimums that gets a big improvement.

Witcher 2(DX 9 but quite demanding), BF3, Crysis 2, DA II, and other DX 11 games provide smoother gameplay without the sudden dips in fps.

I have to say and some will say well of course you'd say this but these are awsome cards, such good cooling solution with higher quality components and they overclock like demonds. :)

£290 is a good price for any 6970, but for this vastly uprated version makes it a very special price indeed. :)

You never got back to me on my email :(

should i buy this or an nVidia card?

Im an ATI novice but this looks a good deal.#

It looks juicier than a GTX 570 for similar money.

But note that this card has quite a high power consumption, especially when overclocked further, and needs a good PSU with two 8 pin PCI-E power connectors.

Edit

Note that these cards aren't clocked as highly as the normal HD 6970 Lightning so I think I'll back off on that statement.

OcUK are going to test a card when they receive it so you're taking a bit of a gamble pre-ordering.

These are none tested so are at stock speeds. When they arrive we shall give one a good clocking too see what they can do. :)

According to http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/msi_r6970_2gb_lightning_review,26.html

Pros
+Very Good performance
+Excellent AA performance
+Very cool and quiet operation
+Dual slot cooling solution
+Eyefinity support
+Very Well packaged
+Excellent bundle & software (inc. mini DP to DisplayPort adapter)
+Substantial factory overclock
+Very good build quality
+Aesthetically pleasing
+Excellent overclocking headroom
+18 phase PWM design
+Vast selection of connectivity and voltage points
+Voltage tweaking support
+Highly Innovative and durable

Cons
-AMD GPU still falls slightly short of Nvidia rivals
-Power consumption
-Size

Meaning i woul still be better buying a GTX570.

Accoring to that review, and the MSI web site, the specs. quoted in the first post are wrong:

940MHz Core

Unless OcUK have a slighly downclocked version @ 880MHz.

I shall reserve further judgement until the results are in then.

Doesn't really help those wanting to pre-order though if they turn out not to be as good overclockers as the reviews suggest.

well for a start they are 940 on the core at stock, plus most people get to 1.1Ghz on air if you know what your doing with them .

What most people don't know is there is a third bios setting on the switch which overrides amd powertune to allow the card to clock further.

countless reviewers miss that for some reason and even msi neglect to mention the switch has a middle setting.

You missed the important part.

These cards are 880MHz at stock and untested.

That's why I said I'd reserve judgement.

i'm sure gibbo means untested by OcUk not untested by MSi/manufacturer

my thought is either it's a error as the lightnings key feature was 940 core or they have found out they are not all stable at 940 so dropped the core to 880 and shunted the price down to get rid of them.

From the MSI page

Graphics Engine AMD Radeon HD 6970
Interface PCI Express x16 2.1
Memory Type GDDR5
Memory Size(MB) 2048
Memory Interface 256 bits
Core Clock Speed(MHz) 940 (STD: 880MHz)<<<<<<<<<<<<<NOW THATS VERY WEIRD NO OTHER CARD SAYS THAT (Maybe 880 core in silence mode and 940 in performance mode)
Memory Clock Speed(MHz) 5500
Memory Bandwidth(GB/sec) N/A

Gibbo confirmed they were 880MHz when I pointed out they should be 940MHz.

"These are none tested so are at stock speed" would seem to say they've not been tested by anyone (including the manufacturer) beyond stock HD 6970 speeds.

You would think there's a reason these seem to have been sold off cheap.

Like I said until we know what speeds they can do I'll reserve judgement on them.

It'll be too late by then of course because the pre-order price will be gone.
