Looking around it appears lots of places are saying the steam forums have been hacked tonight (I know hey are off line now)

I'm now wondering if thats why my L4D2 is "unavailable - try again later" tonight

Anyone else experiencing problems?

nope, no problems here, Its probably just a problem with their servers, with the amount of people that are on it 24/7, you cant blame it for going down every once in a while...

Phew - logged a ticket with them anyway as cr*ppy AVG is flagging the .exe as a trojan?? I've revalidating the game and it still keeps flagging it up

strange times.....................

I would check your PC very carefully for potential virus's / malware mate , no reason why that should happen if it was working before .

Not saying you deffo have a virus or anything but better to be safe rather than sorry.

The steam forums got hacked yesterday and are still down.

Someone put up a redirect to some hacking website - story.

The forums are just vBulletin anyway, and nothing to do with the main Steam site... so unless you happen to use the same login and password for both, nothing to really worry about.

The OP's L4D2 problem is unrelated.

ahh wont be long until our accounts are. it really pee's me off...... why cant people just **** off.....

Disguised swearing isn't allowed either so if you must swear please do fully star it out. Thank you.

Have Valve still not made a formal announcement about this?

I think they ought to, to inform customers whether or not their details may be at risk etc.

No news at all, after this amount of time and from a company of this size is unprofessional IMO.

I assume they had been hacked after I recieved an email from [email protected]
Talking about hacks and so on. Checked the steam forums for info and they were down. Looking at the Kotaku page, the email contained that exact message that was posted there at the top of the steam forum. Ah well.

Steam has not been hacked, their vBulletin installation was compromised and as we all know, the forums are a completely separate entity.

Either an admin username/password was compromised or a VB exploit was used?

Although fkn are implied, their founder has said this on their forum.

The reason I haven't made a public announcement on the forum either confirming or denying what happened, is the end-result is pointless. If I deny it, people will assume it to be damage control. If I confirm it, it would serve as evidence if I'm ever charged for what happened.

I can say I didn't authorize anyone to do what happened so Fkn0wned shouldn't be held responsible. If a member performs illegal actions in our name, there's not much we can do about that other than to ask that member to stop. If a rival site is deliberately trying to bring us down by placing the attention of Valve's legal department on us, there's not much we can do about that either. It's how this scene works and I'll have to accept that.

Make of that what you will.

Its these kind of hackers that are making important people somewhere bring in super strict internet laws. Eventually those bills will get passed and these children will be the ones who sparked it.

I doubt that fkn would have attacked the Steam forums, much less publicly put their name to it, as they would know full well that they would be in deep trouble with the law.

Perhaps one of their members did it without being asked, but I find it hard to believe the owner of the site would sanction it.
