Hi. pc spec in my sig. Just installed my new MSI ATI Radeon HD 6970 2048MB Twin Frozr III. Tried it out on BF3 & it crashed back to windows, tried lower setting & still the same. I though my 550w psu was at fault so ive fitted a 1000w psu. Run BF3 again & crashed to windows again.
Run furmark & crashed to windows saying "diplay driver stopped responding"
Spoke to overclockers tech dept who said to run a prog called heaven bench mark, this time it crashed my pc.
Sorry i forgot to say i had uninstalled all nvidia drivers before fitting new ati 6970.
uninstalled ati drivers ( 11- 12 ) run driver cleaner to remove all i could find, re install ati drivers & still the same, crashing my pc.
Enabled graphics over drive, idle temp is 30oc max temp went to 98oc. Spent hours on this with no luck if someone has a solution id be greatful if not its going back to overclocks & i will exchange it for a gtx 570

Edit... just re fitted my old gtx 260 run furmark & had no problems at all max temp was 63 oc

It sounds like it could be a faulty card or a power issue.

Try going into the Catalyst Control Centre, Performance, AMD Overdrive.

Tick the box to enable AMD Overdrive and Set the Power Control Settings to +20%.

Ignore the actual settings in the image below but it shows you where to make the change.

I had a similar issue and was down to overheating and lack of power. Like you I bought a decent branded psu (cosair hx 850) which solved the power problem.

The overheating in my case came from a dodgy stock intel CPU cooler. Swapped this for the one in my sig and the pc stopped crashing with the graphic card not responding. Then installed some case fans and this dropped the temps right down. Check your CPU temps as well as your gpu.

If your card is running at 98c on stock settings it sounds like it is faulty. I have the same card but 6950 and at 100% usage it runs at 60c on stock settings at the very most. It sounds very much like a faulty card but do check you CPU temps first.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help guys. A number of tests have been done, spoke to oc tech & have agreed its faulty. Have ordered a gtx 580 & sending the 6790 back for a refund.
I knew i should have stuck to nvidia.

yeah those damn AMD noobs all they do is make broken cards!!!
