Under the name "Performance Tuning Protection Plan", Intel is offering overclockers the chance to buy an insurance for their CPU's, that will guarantee replacement even if the CPU is damaged during overclocking. The amount you have to pay is 20 to 35 USD, but if you already have the CPU it will take 30 days to be activated. Prices:

Intel Core i5-2500K – $20.00
Intel Core i7-2600K – $25.00
Intel Core i7-2700K – $25.00
Intel Core i7-3930K – $35.00
Intel Core i7-3960X – $35.00

The program in for now in a 6 month trial phase.

What happens when they run out of CPUs for the model you have? Surely you could just run 1.8V through it when Sandy Bridge is discontinued to get the latest available processor of equivalent price for that motherboard?

(I have no idea what the linked article says unfortunately, other than the bits in your post)

God I hope so :p

I imagine they'll make quite a bit of money out of this if anyone is stupid enough to buy it. I reckon only careless people are going to blow up their processors every two minutes.

Kind of confused about that article, not sure if it is saying that you'll only be able to get one every 30 days or you'll have to wait 30 days.

How on earth is Intel gonna know you've overclocked your CPU and blown it up? No way of knowing imo

Burnt pins and stuff I guess. I think most of the time you are either going to:

A: Feed it loads of voltage and fry it.

B: The motherboard explodes.

CPU's are pretty durable if you keep the voltages reasonable, I guess.

I'm guessing this is targeted at more 'extreme' overclockers and the paranoid.

Didnt Gibbo say that he would honour the guarantee anyway if you did blow it with too much voltage or too much overclocking ?

It's written that Intel CPUs detect overvolting and that an Intel technician can just plug the CPU into a machine that instantly says if it's been damaged by overclocking or not. I'm certain it's been stated here and elsewhere 100's of times that the core architecture has overvolt detection, possibly even Core2Duo.

The same way you can tell a car engine that has blown up from heat traces, and holes in the places suseptible to heat build up.

its impossible if its blown electrically fried the inside,no way they would know what multiplier or voltages you were using, cpu's can fail at anytime due to manufacturing fault/mb fault/lightening strike/power outage ect

maybe they employ columbo? yh thats how they know

Seems it's valid as long as your standard 3 year warranty, so unless you're going to mess your CPU up real bad it doesn't make sense to get this over your standard warranty.

that's a stupid mistake, they will go bancrupt with that because people will just chuck in higher voltages than usual and more cpu's will die under warranty.
