Hi,

Have just purchased 2 viper fans (on sale - thank you very much OC) but havent actually decided how I want to use them yet!

My initial thoughts were to replace my Antec Khuler stock fans with these but what I dont understand (as I have seen other people swapping their stock fans) is will this be ok as the fans seem to have a lower RPM? Difference being 2400 on stock to 1900 on the vipers...
My main reason for this is pretty much if I play BF3 (or other high powered game) the fans kick in on full and they are quite loud... it doesnt bother me too much but if I could reduce this noise and keep the same kind of effeciveness (or better) I would be happy to do this!
If anyone has done a similar thing to this and has experience of the viper 120mm fans I would love to know their experiences... are the vipers powerful enough and how much quieter actualyl are they to the stock khuler fans?

I had seen on another thread (I belive on OC forum) that someone else had placed a fan inside the DVD drive bay area beneath their DVD player which seemed like an excellent idea... I was thinking about putting both of mine in this location one pushing through to the other one to really whack some cool air over the processor and directly towards the exhaust that cools the khuler. Is their any reason this is a bad idea etc?

Thansk for all your help...

Best regards

Mike

p.s I have a ultima tyranosaur if that helps...

Hi Mate ,
i have the antec Kuhler 920 ,swapped out the stock fans for vipers, runs very cool and quiet. My temps never go over 53c when playing BF3 also never hit full fan speed with my custom fan profile. i was so impressed by the vipers i got another 4

sorry for the poor photo

Hi Wazz,

Thanks for the info... what ramp up temps are you using?
How easy is it to swap the fans (I didnt install this into the systerm)... any tips for this?

When you say your temps are you referring to liquid temp or your core temps?

Thanks in advance for your help
Mike

To change the fans you just need a screwdriver.

Very happy with the vipers on my H80 (corsairs equivalent to the 920). Stress load temps (on cores/package) peak at around 70c while gaming load barely breaks 50c.

@Wazz, what did you use to 'pimp' the tubing on the 920? Looks pretty nice :)

Im sure this is a n00b question but how are you checking the load temp when gaming?

edit-

I mean I have core temp but when in the game I cant see it of course ... is their an easy way to see this accurately for the time you have been gaming? :/

what fan speed is that at? Did you also make sure to reset the max temp stat in coretemp (either in program or just close/restart program)?

BF3 pushes my temps the highest, in a warm room I've seen it hit around 54c, mostly sits around 48c.

Temps are also dependant on clock speed and core voltage, it could be that a rather high voltage was needed to get to the pre-sale clock stated. Also note that my voltage is VERY low for my clock, maybe another reason why my temps are pretty good.

see pic below, Ramp start temp = 28, full fan speed = 38.

core temps. Liquid temps 31c @ idle

To 'pimp' the tubes some uv blue spiral wrap from that auction site we all love to hate;)
Looks good with the uv but not so good with out.

@Mike
during game (bf3) all four cores hit a max of around 70... yours only hits 50 :|

is this something I need to worry about or?
Does seem a little high but temps can vary from all kinds of factors, clock speed and core voltage, room temps, fan speeds & profiles.
Here's mine after 10 passes of IBT on max

What temps do you get with IBT?

Thanks for any help / advice you are able to give me... I know I have purchased an overclocked PC but I really know nothing about this aspect of PC's ... but of course I do want to have a little bit of understanding of the PC and to ensure it is running best it can!

Cheers

You need to post a screen while the system is under load, the clock speed you have shown is durring speed step idling @ 1.6ghz. under load the clock speed will change :)

The voltage isn't that bad IMO, not for 4.8ghz anyway, but its probably the source of the higher temps.

What motherboard did you get in the bundle? hit the mainboard tab in cpu-z it should tell you.

If I was in you're position I'd look at a lower clock (4.6ghz?) to lower the voltage if thats the only remaining option. I would guess you don't really need a clock as high as that :)

Is it as simple as just lowering the voltage slightly?
Like I say I am pretty green at this! - if that will reduce my temps quite a bit I will gladly give it a go - i can only assume lowering the voltage is impossible to damage the system in any way lol

Motherboard is the Asus maximus IV Extreme-Z

To lower the voltage is this done in the bios? Do you have asuggestion for what voltage to try?

Firstly im sure that the guy's at Ocuk did an excellent job with the overclock, looks like a realy nice system, would have thought you could get 4.8GHz with lower volts tho with that processor, cooler & board. If you got a 580 in there I'm not sure if that could be dumping a lot of heat in case but I'm not familiar with the case or GPU. IBT will stress your system more than anything you will be doing gaming, i'm assuming this is your main usage, so a max 70c wouldnt worry me but i personly would like my temps lower. As pgi947 said you could lower your overclock to 4.6 GHz , you wouldnt notice the 200Mhz drop.
I would set multi x46 and vcore to 1.35,stress test again with IBT That would be a good place to start
Edit - Also check what speed your memory is running at.

Well to be honest I'd rather not go touching these things as long as I'm completely safe which I guess overall from the above comments I am ... Once I've received the fans and changed those I am hoping to something similar to the two intake fans you have at the front if your case ...
Cheers for all your help guys

mmm... had a change of heart - changed the options like you sai.
Was actually pretty easy so now I am a certified underclocker :D

All core temps went down around 4 degrees under full load - is it worth going a little lower? Im not too fussed - i would rather have piece of mind than the system too hot.

The memory is running at 1600 in the bios... is this normal?

Thanks again for your help.

Mike

If you're down to 4.6GHz @ 1.35v and stable that's good. If you want to tinker little more you could drop the v core a little at a time doing 2 or 3 runs of burn test each time until it fails and the go back up to the last setting and fully test 10 runs IBT, you might find you can have 4.6GHz with a little less volts than 1.35 and 1 or 2 degrees less to boot:)
If you look at my pic I have 4.5GHz @ 1.304v but remember not all processors will clock the same. Have fun mate that's a nice system you got.
