Q6660 + ASUS GTX 560 Ti

Hello,

I was wondering if it would be a bottleneck to buy a ASUS GTX 560 Ti/560 for my q6600 (3.2ghz) I want to play bf3 at 1920x1080.
if yes what graphics card do you recommend and why?

Thanks for your time.

a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz only just bottlenecks a GTX580 in my experience (as in 90-95% GPU usage at 100% CPU usage)

a 560ti runs at 99% constant even at 3.2ghz

a 560ti on high was playable and seemingly smooth but setting either textures to ultra or turning on MSAA made it crawl

if you can get a good deal on a 2nd hand 570 it might be worth a shot but I wouldn't bother getting a retail priced one

A GPU running at 99/100% does not mean it's not bottlenecked anyone that runs a GTX580 on a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz for gaming it a bit silly, unless they are planning a CPU upgrade.

As for the 560Ti, it will be held back by the Q6600, but with bf3 you will get a more out of it than most other games.

In your shoes I'd get the 560Ti with the understanding the CPU will hold it back to varying degrees depending on the game in question. The 2GB version is worth consideration, but it is quite a price increase over the 1GB.

It's not worth getting anything faster, unless you were gonna upgrade the CPU at some point in the not too distant future.

Thanks, I will not be upgrading the cpu on this rig but I will be making a new one completely soon. All I want to know is do you think bf3 will be playable on a q6600 and gtx560/ or Ti

I played BF3 happily with a Q8400 @ 3.2 with a 560ti card 1GB and after upgrading my computer I didn't notice any difference at all. If there was a bottleneck I didn't notice it.

Go for it you will be fine.

Thanks. what resolution were you playing at? how much ram?

560ti with q6600 vs 3930k = same frame rate = no bottleneck
yes i have tested both myself... have you?

560ti would be a good GPU to get, something like This should work well. 2GB vram would be the minimum I would get now days at your res especially if you like to turn the settings up. of course it all depends on your budget.

Extra vram so you wont get bad stuttering if a game exceeds 1gb, which could easily happen at 1920x1080.

on high preset BF3 uses 900mb
on ultra I've seen it peek at about 1.8gb but a 560ti 2gb can't play BF3 on ultra preset completely smooth anyway so it's largely moot (unless you were thinking of going SLI when the prices drop - in which case definitely get a 2GB, but then that would require a whole new system anyway, so ignore me haha)

gg

I assume this was an exhaustive test checking minimum, maximum, mean and average frame rates in all aspects of the game?

You may also note I did suggest getting the card, and that getting anything faster will be a waste.
