Should you buy a tick or a tock?

Tock's are best

I only ever go for tock's, as it's pointless going for the in betweens. Only if you really need a new PC would I say go for the ticks.

Yes, usually it is better with the new architecture than the new process - for example Core 2 65nm to 45nm wan't a massive performance jump, but Core 2 45nm to Core i7/i5 45nm was a pretty large jump.

Yep i usually get the 'tock' , not only due to process being refined, but the platform maturing and prices getting more mainstream. P67 cougarpoint sata issue being one of the more memorable infancy issues in recent times!

A new architecture should always bring bigger gains than a die shrink; the best argument for buying a tick is that these processors should retain their value better due to buyers wanting to upgrade their machine without changing platform.

Also please not the use of "should" in both of the above statements ;)

The tock is the one to get, Sandy, Nehalehm all posted big gains in comparison to their predecessors and successors (we will see when IVy is out for Sandy).

Just go for which ever one is available when you need to upgrade surely?

This, if you're processor is no longer fast enough then buy the fastest one you can afford, unless there's something new coming in a month in which case wait for that. Whether it's a tick or tock is irrelevant.

This is the first time I've ever heard of ticks or tocks.

I like it though :p

I'm about to dip my toes into the tock end I think.

Depends on your circumstances. If you have a sandy bride cpu now, there is no real reason to upgrade to Ivy. If you're like me & still on 775 or something, it is worth the wait for a month or two.

My main reason though is the 77w tdp, should make for good overclocking. Also my room gets too hot in the summer on my q9550 :)

Always buy the best equipment you can afford, at the time you need it, without being lured into the money-pit at the bleeding edge. Everything else is hype.

Less heat production so a little more headroom. Also, generally chips with low TDP might be 'normal' chips that just run a lower stock vcore, so possibly binned better for that particular reason, thus possibly better overclockers.

Generally prefer 'tocks', but of course depends how my current set-up is performing, the state of my scrilla and upgrade itch.

Currently have a i5 750 (Lynnfield) which is a tock, before this I had an E8400 (Wolfdale) which was a 'tick', and Haswell will be my next upgrade and it'll be a tock.

:)
