I have a semi-dynamic (it very rarely changes but it does change). I use my computer as a server for a number of things so always need to know what my ip is even when i'm elsewhere in the world.

Is there a way i could create a script or program what would ping a file on my webspace every few hours, then access this file online say via my mobile to return the IP address of my home machine?

It sounds simple, but i have no programming knowledge so i'm wondering how to go about this and where to start.

Was just about to recommend http://dyn.com/dns/ as they used to offer a free service but looks like its now paid-only (still only $20 a year though, so not bad).

With this you either use your router (most routers support it) or a desktop app to keep their servers updated with your current IP and then this is linked to a url of your choice.

Perhaps someone will come in with a free alternative? If you want to pay though, those guys are the best: http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-pro/.
