***HD7800 Series Reviews***

The 7870 is Extremely impressive!

Gob smacked at the results tbh, AMD have certainly delivered not just what people were expecting/hoping but better IMO with the 7850 better than the 6950 and up with the 570/6970 and the 7870 firmly better than the 6970 and at the heals of the 7950/580  It just depends on the price....... these could be costly

It will be about £275 inc vat in this country (based on the ratios of the USD price to the 7950's price)

On first look the 7870 looks to be following the trend of stupid overpricing on AMD's part, so we get GTX 570 performance (95%@1080p TPU) for only 10% more cost, wow

The big problem with AMDs pricing is it is based according to the performance of current 40nm products, historically this is not how it has worked. When the die shrink comes the first company out typically blows away the competition on similarly priced products.

Think about it if every gen was priced like this we would be paying £2k now for the top end part. The part AMD are replacing with the 7870 costs £140, putting the 7870 at ~£275 is just madness IMHO

Will be very good at that price but I expect the to be a bit more expensive here considering the rest of the 7*** series.
I wonder if they overclock well too... cant see the 7870 overclocking much as its already very high but the 7850 looks like it may be able to

edit: Actually £275 seems about right considering the 7950 is as low as £330, maybe £285-300 though I reckon for the 7870 and £220-250 for the 7850. But I wouldn't be surprised if they are a bit more than that. Realisticly were probably looking at the 7850 for £250/60 and 7870 for £310/20

I bet Nvidia will be very very relieved if the 7870 comes in at £275 and the 7850 proportionately lower. If they'd come in at £225/£175 that would really have hit Nvidia where it hurts most.

Edit: Looking at the USD price the 7850 will be £200

AMD dont need to 'draw their cards' though so I dont see it happening, they have no competition from Nvidia right now and can keep making as much money as possible of both their 7***'s cards and 6***'s cards while crippling Nvidia's 580 and 570 sales because they are stubborn and wont drop their prices lol

The cards are impressive leaps from the 68XX, but their price will put them too close to 69XX.
Although they would be the better buy from a new buyers point of view.

You are wrong to say they have no competition from Nvidia.

The 7950 and 7970 are a clear win, you'd have to be mad to buy a 580 over those.

At $20 more than 570 the choice is not so clear for the 7870, I think it wins on balance for me personally but plenty of people would choose 570 over it.

Coming down to the 7850, 7770 things are very different and there is credible competition from Nvidia and AMD themselves with the 6870.

Depending on the review, the 7870 results are all over the place, even matching a 580 in some reviews.

I just look at the averages on TPU and Anand personally, of course the 7870 overall isn't on par with a 580 - it would be ~equal to 7950 if that were the case.

The first 4 on Anand have it almost matching a 580, it bests the 580 in Shogun 2.
Hence "The results are all over the place" :p
Bests the 580 again in Starcraft II.
*All depending on the resolution, seems to best it in one, lose out in another.

Yeh the 7870 is better than the 6970/570 and at the heals of the 7950 and 580 and considering its 1ghz clock it isnt too surprising, its the 7850 that competes closer and not far behind to the 570 and 6970, overclocked I think it will surpass them at stock with ease.

Awesome I'm very happy! Now I'll just have to wait until these are £220. I'm not spending £250. Any idea on the release date?

Anandtech said it's a paper launch with stock later this month. About time those were punishable with public lashings IMO.

The 7870 is better than I thought it would be.

Pity (again) about the pricing of the new cards.

It's just come to be expected that when all these new cards start coming out, you start getting some decent deals on last gen stuff. Not this time around - not for a while at least anyway.
