Hi. I'm seriously considering buying a Samsung 3D/120hz monitor from OcUK which is going for a song at the moment, but do you think framerates in 3D wil be ok or not with my system, 5850 extreme, Phenom x 2 and 4GB ram?

If you want the full 3d effect using the supplied Tridef software then some games will take a hit, I have a similair setup to yours and some games take a hit, but not awful. Skyrim for instance, runs at about 30 fps makxed out with the 3d on full whack.

The monitor also does a 2d>3d conversion itself where it doesn't use the graphics card. The 3d isn't as impressive as the tridef software but there is virtually no impact on frame rate, I use this mode more often than the Tridef software.

Seriously just buy the monitor mate, it's the deal of the millennium at this price, you will not regret it.

Thanks, I'm gonna do it :)

Use the Sammie's own 3D conversion. it's good enough IMO (although there is some ghosting)

I don't think a single 5850 can produce 120fps on max settings in any of the new games

I've just ordered the monitor. I've got Crysis 2 which I haven't started yet. Will I be able to make use of the 120Hz on that?

To be honest, hardly any of my games hit 120fps but even at 30-50frames on the 120hz it still feels much smoother than 30-50fps on a 60hz monitor, 120hz is the way forward it is just gorgeous.

From what i have seen so far Crysis 2 looks the best in 3D

Bulletstorm kicks it's ass for 3D effects, by far the best I've tried yet(imo of course), my 3D game of choice by far at the moment, I must ad that it was a bit meh and I tried it a couple of times and walked away in 2D, but it's as if it's a whole different game.

All games launched via Tridef game launcher unless stated.

BF3(not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game), very disappointing, thought it would be much, much better, especially compared with the effects on other titles, quite a performance hit too!

L4D2, incredible 3D effect, the best use of 3D of all the games I tried, imo the overall depth, looking into the distance is incredible.

Skyrim, stunning 2nd best looking title for me absolutely fantastic.

Deuss Ex(not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game), it's ok, but nothing special.

BAC, fantastic, not much of a performance hit and Bats looks incredible when you pan the camera around him it has to be seen to take it in.

Dead Space 2, fantastic.

Bulletstorm, very immersive.

ME3, good looking and lots of depth.

F3 NV, great looking.

Dirt 3, (not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game) disappointing as I heard it was very impressive, maybe expected too much.

Portal 2, looks great but I was getting a huge performance hit.

Crysis 2, fantastic, not much of a hit.

Crysis, sore on the senses, it looks great, but I was getting a shimmering effect, maybe have to play about with the settings and there is a considerable performance hit too.

NFSTR, not bad, better for me than Dirt.

Warhammer space Marines looks good too(Tridef), with blood splattering the screen more often than not, it's hilarious but it takes a hefty hit for me but playable all the same.

Witcher 2 is impressive, even straight off the Sammy 2d>3d conversion(which is the beauty of this monitor when you read below).

There is a profile and workaround over @Tridef in the forum to enable 3D, afaik, both Project Red and Nvidia are currently struggling to get 3D working after the latest patch(could have changed by now though).

Will have to look at getting that then :)

Good to know as I was wondering if I'd get much benefit from 120Hz, since my average FPS in games is always quite low, like, anywhere from 30 to 59fps. But from what you're saying, I will.

I have a list here of Tridef 3D supported games. Is it odd that Crysis and Warhead are supported but Crysis 2 isn't on the list?

Tridef is sloppy at best with support. It is funded by AMD though...

I uploaded Tridef 3D screenshots, Bulletstorm is there if you want to take a look:

Started this thread since the Samsung S23A700D 120Hz monitor has sold superbly here@OcUK(Thanks guys):D

Anyone with Tridef installed can view these 3D game pics through Tridef, the only downside being they can only be viewed through Tridef:

Games included so far are, Bulletstorm, Batman Arkham City, Mass Effect 3 and Warhammer Space Marines.

I will add more if the thread creates any interest and feel free to do the same and add your screenshots through Tridef: simply press 'Print Screen' to capture and it saves to your Docs.

Then you can upload them to a Dropbox folder, click the padlock on the end and 'get link'.

I uploaded some screenshots on Dropbox, anyone can view them from the link below:

That's because Crysis 2 does not work properly in Tridef.

There are user created profiles on the forums over there if you look hard enough though.

However, and I'm not sure if any one has broke the bad news to you yet but your GPU stands 0 chance of running a hundred metre sprint, let alone 3d games at acceptable frame rates.

Tridef eats into your power and you can expect massive hits in FPS because of it. Virtual 3D runs faster but the effect is disappointing.

To give you an idea of what 3D does to a 7970 take a look at these benchmarks.

Also consider that those benchmarks were ran using passive 3D which hits FPS less than the active method you have chosen.

I think you'll be looking at a system upgrade, especially if you were thinking of playing titles such as Crysis 2. Left 4 Dead you may get away with on that card.

The monitor can be used for 3D without using Tridef remember Andy- zero performance hit to any gpu with Sammy's onboard 3D conversion.

Worst case scenario, he doesn't use Tridef.
