There is one for the iOS side of things, how about a one for the actual Macintosh o/s side of things.

I'll start, shall I?

---------------------------------

(The following apps are a combination of Free/Paid for).

Adobe Suite.
Unison.
Transmit.
Coda.
Skype.
Microsoft Office for Mac suite.
Twitter.
Chrome.
Thunderbird.
Steam.
The Unarchiver.
Final Cut Pro.

Ah yes, how could I forget! 1password, that is a god send of an application if you cannot be bothered typing in all the fields over and over again.

For those in academia...

Papers2 is awesome! It is like endnote but it can store copies of your journals in it's database (and it then allows you to search no only journal titles for words but the text as well!)

The twitter app is also very nice and so is facetab... Ctrl and T to open twitter, Ctrl and N to create a new tweet, Ctrl and F to open facebook, and Ctrl and P to open Papers... (I like my shortcuts! haha :p )

Seems most of mine are covered but I'd add

Evernote - great to keep my notes synced with work, iPad, and iPhone
Parallels - I use this for work mostly, but it's very useful to be able to drop in to a windows environment
Chrome - never liked Safari, and Chrome is just so damn fast.
Lastpass - technically a plugin for a browser, but it's free and it's so useful
Twitter - falling out with it and hoping for Tweetbot for OSX!

I've only had my Mac 2 months so I'm a bit of a noob and in need of a thread like this :D

But as a writer, I can thoroughly recommend iA Writer. Love its simplicity.

Xcode. Since it's free. They also appear to have finally made it behave properly with the appstore as well as being a completely self contained package and not having it throw folders all over the filesystem.

My new Macbook air should be turning up any day now, I've read mixed reviews on the performance of Office on mac, so what alternatives to word and excel should I be looking at?

I've had this thread in my favourites for a while now, it's going to come in real handy when it finally does turn up :)
