Picked up one of these from OCUK the other day, arrived yesterday and dropped it in my nice spanky new rig today.

Performs nicely, but have a question or two. Can't find anything about this particular card set up out and about on the internet. The product code (PM2D1GD5) points to a fairly-reference card with a single fan heatsink, so I'm wondering firstly if this is an Overclockers UK exclusive?

Second issue - fans. They are both locked on and constantly at 100%, no matter what I do with regards to the AMD Catalyst Control Panel or MSI's Afterburner utility. Starting to think it may be a bad decision buying this card, if it is an OCUK exclusive and the fans aren't controllable.

I may be wrong but the fans look like they only have two wires coming from the, which I think would mean there's no way for them to have manually or automatically adjusted speed. Unless cards can control the voltage going to the fans to slow them down?

Also may add, I've never seen this specific model or cooler before.

I am seriously considering purchasing one of these cards tomorrow. would you say you are happy with the card and what games have you tried and how does it cope?..

I really am stuck with which card to purchase and this seemed to be ok and a pretty good price too?

hi,

the 6850 is a solid performer in anything you throw at it, i myself have a hd6870 wich is a bit better any that can demolish anything i throw at it with great frames. pick up the 6850 you wont regret, bang for the buck mate.

Have to agree with king2014 - it is a good card. Be prepared for noise though!

Yeah, that was my thought. I've nosed around the card a little more and it's an odd one.

The pin header on the card PCB is a 4-pin socket, and the pin on the fan cable is a 4-pin fan with 4 cables running out from it into a sleeve... with only 2 cables coming out of the sleeve and connecting to the fans. Pull the sleeve back and you find two cables cut off halfway down it. This suggests to me that the fans MSI/whomever OCUK sourced these cards from are el cheapo, as cables 3 and 4 would presumably be the sensor and control cables.

Suggests to me that an aftermarket 4-pin PWM fan slapped on in place of the MSI dual fans will work with proper speed control. I've got an Arctic Cooling 92mm jobby turning up tomorrow to give it a try. Will feed back and let you know!

Roalith:

when you had a look had both fans been soldered together to run onto the one fan connector on the pcb ?

think i've got a couple of 4 pin fans i might try hooking up tonight if i get chance.

Yeah, both fans run off the same 4 pin connector, fan 2 is daisy chained on to fan 1.

well theres a bit of a problem with trying to fit new fans :(.

tried to cable tie an apache 120mm fan to the cooler but the 4 pin connection on it is to big for the 4 pin connection on the pcb.

can only imagine Roalith is going to have similar problems with the 92mm fan hes getting :(.

so cable tied a couple of 120mm fans to it and connected them to the motherboard.

quieter and cooler so not to bad.
