I thins explains it all. This result is taken on a good day when nobody but me was connected to the internet with no background tasks running.

It's going to be an increasing problem unless some genius comes up with something to improve transfer rates over long lengths of standard phone cable.

As those in populated areas get 100mb and websites grow ever heavier those stuck in the wilderness are going to suffer.

Thats why I think BT and Virgin should focus more on getting everyone on to at least 10mb rather than chasing headlines with 80 and 120mb.

Still for browsing and general use it cant be worse than 1mb, and it least it is becoming semi affordable for those who really do live in the middle of nowhere and have few other options

Where abouts in Lincolnshire are you, I am in Alford and have had the same issue as you, luckily talktalk moved some equipment into the exchange and I now enjoy 19mb, check your exchange at samknows website to see if talktalk are in it

Have you considered maybe using a router that allows sharing of 3G Internet via dongle? If any networks near you have good 3G coverage I bet you'll get a faster speeds :).

What about writing to your community counsellor and asking about a community funded long range Wi-Fi install?

We did, and about a year later a company was in installing all the necessary bits and pieces in the village. Now, everyone has a small Wi-Fi access point on their home which connects to the transmitter in the village.

Depending on line of sight you can get some crazy speeds. I get around 15Mb down, 15Mb up with 5ms ping from 5.02km away. My parents get 24Mb down, 24Mb up with similar pings. The difference being they are 2km away and don't have massive trees blocking the aerial :p

All of this came funded through the welsh assembly government, but to have it installed (minus funding) was about £400 IIRC so it could be considered a great long term investment.

Have a good around. There are even sites that operate offering installation of such services if you can gather enough interest.
