i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E)

nice and with 32gb of ram too! Could you post the list of settings you changed from bios defaults so I can test them out please if you want to?

Mine does 5,240mhz every single day with RAM at 2444mhz. Easy!!! on RIVE. actually took about ten minutes to get this, although I am experienced with the board. I bought one to mess about with and save my excellent 3930K for benching only 5.5ghz bench on this 3820 is also easy.

Out of the Cpu's I mentioned! a 2600k and a 3820. Which would you settle with if you were making a choice between the two?

Both chips perform pretty much the same but I'd go with a 3820, LGA1155 is now a dead socket while 2011 still has IB-E to come next year so you end up with an upgrade option.

Just noticed the Motherboards are a bit on the pricey side! Also looks like I would need to buy a new cooler aswell to go down the 2011 road.

on that subject, cooler installation on socket 2011 is about the easiest there's ever been. You screw everything direct into the socket mounts and thats it. Uber easy.

If you dont need all the features of the RIVE, the formula and Gene are great X79 boards also.

If it was me I would go X79 for sure 2600K is old tech and no where near as fun to tweak. X79 supports PCI EX 3.0 too and has a lot more native PCI EX lanes with more possibilities for expansion.

X79 also has a new CPU coming in Ivy -E

It's not guarenteed though is it?
For example 20% of the time my PC doesn't display anything (even the bio screen) if I set the PCI-e lanes to be Gen3. I'm guessing this is why Nvidia have done what they've done with their drivers. meaning you have to run a hack/fix to enable PCI-e 3.0 on X79 board with Nvidia cards (also heard of some AMD users having issues with PCI-e 3.0, but AMD haven't chenged drivers to remove support).

My understanding is that this is down to the CPU rather than the motherboard though.

anyone reckon my overclock will get much greater with my H80 if I upgrade to this rampage board. Thinking about it on pay day. Does it have more than 2 intel sata 3 ports? If so I'm deffo getting it for my plans.

No. I think 2 Intel sata3 ports is part of the the spec for these boards. I'm pretty sure Asus and the others don't add Marvell controllers onto the board for the fun of it.
