Hi - having some issues with a new build.

Works fine with onboard graphics, but as soon as I install the Gigabyte GTX670 Windforce 3x it crashes on Windows7 startup screen and goes into a constant reboot pattern.

I can boot up in safe mode (the only way I could install the drivers), but same problem still.

Switching back to on-board HD4000 works fine. Disabling on-board in BIOS makes no difference.

Nothing in Event Viewer. Turned off all unnecessary Nvidia startup in msconfig. No change in behaviour.

Any ideas?

Where did you start from?

As in, did you have this computer up and running and then tried to install a new card?

Or was it from scratch...

It sounds like when the pc is starting up it is loading the wrong drivers... unistall all graphics drivers, reboot, delete all Nvidia/Ati folders in program files, go in to device manager and find the gpu and choose to unistall the driver, reboot.

It should boot in to windows using a generic driver. If you get this far install the nvidia drivers.

If this doesnt work then I reckon you should back up your data and reformat the pc.

Should work unless the card is borked!

Yup. Uninstall the Intel drivers, disable onboard graphics, make sure gfx on boot is set to PEG/PCI in BIOS and boot/install Windows using the GTX670. Once everything is running fine, you can enable the onboard and install drivers for it.

That's the order I did it.

This is a brand new build with all new components, so I am coming from a clean install. Tried 2 Win7 installs now with same results.

Will have another go at what you have suggested, but I am not holding my breath :(

Thanks for the reply, I'll let you know how I get on

Using latest motherboard drivers etc? What motherboard are you using? Tried reseating the card?

Latest drivers for motherboard (Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H). Tried latest Nvidia drivers too. Latest BIOS (F9).

Reseated the card about 20 times by now by swapping it in and out.

Currently I'm on it in safe mode, but go anywhere near normal mode and it blows up :(

I'm all out of ideas at the moment.

Have you got a spare computer you could try the card in or a friends? Or a spare gfx card you could try in your new build?

This.

Try to discern whether the card is faulty at a hardware level by trying a different card in your machine or it in another, if possible.

Ok... soo...

The card works in another machine. So the card doesn't appear to be at fault.

Swapped the card back to new rig. Put old PSU in new rig, but still the same behaviour.

1 memory stick makes no difference.

So I can only deduce that it is the motherboard, hdd or cpu.

Any ideas guys? Still can only get into safe mode.

My money is on HDD. Just a guess. Got a spare to test a fresh windows install with?

Unfortunately not.

I had my suspicions I may have a problem with the hdd. It's a Samsung 830 "Notebook/Apple Series" 250GB SSD.

It does say compatible with desktop but I'm not sure how I could be so foolish to go with something with Apple in the name!

hmmm... I'm into Windows!

Changed from Intel to Marvell SATA ports.

Changed generic SATA cable to the one labelled 'HDD'

Removed 1 memory stick (the other one, that I hadn't checked in isolation)

And I'm in... so just to work out what's wrong with one of those 3 :)

Thanks for the help so far

So which did it turn out to be?
