controlling cpu fan speeds

(wasnt sure to post in here or CPU's so if its wrong sorry!)

Right.. just got a 'new to me' AMD X2 system with a Freezer Pro rev2 cooler with PWM fan

the idle temps are around 25 degrees (room temp ish) but the fan is still running around 1300rpm and does increase very easily even on a slight increase in core temp

So if possible i would like to restrain it a bit.. as its barely getting warm (even overclocked from 3.1 to 3.6)

I have installed SpeedFan.. but i cant seem to see how to override the std settings..

oh and there is no custom options in the bios either (gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H )

I am sure it will be possible.. but not having much luck finding it :\

In speed fan you need to go into the configure part. Go to advanced. In the drop down menu select what I think is supposed to be the motherboard. And where it lists the PWM (there may be several), change them to 'software controlled' and tick remember this. You should be able to set it to whatever you want then.

You can set it to ramp it up when needed temperature wise, but it'll require some more info which I can explain if you want me to?

You need to go to the advanced tab on that window you're in there. On there there should be a drop down menu where you can select a few options. On mine it is the first option that should bring up a list of things. On there it also has the PWM1, 2 and 3. On there you will need to select each one and change it on the bottom drop down menu to 'software controlled' and click remember it.

I'll try and get a picture up for you whilst you try it.

The bottom drop down box is the one you change to software controlled, and the tick box for remembering it is just next to it.

As you can see, mine is already set to software controlled

now set to 30% and 950rpm and silent mmm.. is there supposed to be a range of speeds to set it to? only 1 seems to make any difference

What do you mean by a range of speeds? Do you mean the 3 different PWM's? Because I don't really know what the three do myself . I've got 2 and 3 always set to 100% and number 1 I alter depending on the situation. If I set 1 to 0, it turns the fan off, and 100% is just over 2000rpm, so I've got no clue what the other 2 PWM's do, I'm sure someone on here could help us out with that one . I've actually set mine to be between 30 and 70% depending on the heat of the cpu. 70% is still pretty quiet on mine so I'm happy with that .

got it sorted mate!.. dug thru the config menu and set the working pwm1 to 25% and 40% and the cpu desired temp to 40 deg

means it runs at 820rpm and 25 deg and warms up to like 42 deg and 1250rpm ... so lower than original idle fan speed!

result!

No problem . Glad you got it sorted. It does have quite a daunting config screen I think. I opened it and was thinking 'where do I even begin ?' But found a few threads and got it sorted .

Yeah, I've got an ivy bridge i5 and set desired temp to 35, and fan speed between 35% and 70% (because for some reason, if it goes lower than 35% the fan just stops. Probably too little voltage for it), and got it starting up at boot so I don't have to do anything now

Nope there is not, and because it needs you to allow it to run because of the UAC (provided that you have it enabled) you need a little work around to allow it to just start by itself at boot without having to allow it to do so every time (or at least I think this is needed, read it was...anyway)...

Open task scheduler.
Select create basic task.
Enter any name for it (ie Speedfan) and press next
Select 'When I log on'. Press next
Select 'start a program' press next
Browse for speedfan in the program files and select it. Press next again.
(now i'm working from memory so the next steps might not be super accurate )
Then it should be pretty much complete, and tick open the properties window when i press finish (something along those lines)
When the properties window pops up there should be a drop down menu at the bottom where one of the options is 'run with the highest privileges' select that.
And then theres one right at the bottom where you can select something to do with operating systems, I just chose windows 7, although I'm not sure what it would do if you chose another one.
Then click close of finish or whatever.

And that should be done . Also, you can change in the options of speedfan for it to start minimized which is nice to select for when it boots so then you really haven't got to do anything with it, it'll just control the fans and run itself in the background .

Any problems with the vague second half of those instructions, just post it here and I'll try and be a bit clearer

in 15 years of computing thats the first time i can think of i have ever created a task lol!

seems to work a treat tho!

i normally turn UAC off or the lowest setting anyway.. but this is a new install atm


I also tried running the min speed so the fan is off.. but it waited til it got to 40deg before even coming on and had to then run faster while it was on then going off again

instead on its lowest setting 26% it just ticks over very quietly

now to find a nice micro atx case and get off the desk lol

No problem . Yeah when I was searching for a way to get it to start at boot I found the info about the task scheduler, and it was a totally new one to me too . I leave UAC on, just for a bit of safety in case of a dodgy site trying to do anything. But the task thing works a charm. I used it to start real temp on boot too since it seems more accurate than speedfan for temps (although I have used the offset option to rectify it, so it uses the fans correctly , I still just have that up with a warning at 70 degrees, in case speed fan reads it wrong for any reason).

Yeah I did that myself at first too, but to be honest, I couldn't tell the difference between it being off and being on the minimum from an acoustic perspective so I just left it on 35% minimum fan speed and it just ticks over very nicely the same as yours and doesn't have to spin up and down every few seconds .

Glad to see you're all set up with it now though
