A lot is at stake when a company changes its logo, and Microsoft changed it a number of times in its early years.

For the first time in 25 years, Microsoft is changing its corporate logo.

Microsoft, which has used its solid, boldfaced, italicized logo since 1987, is expected to unveil its new, more colorful logo Thursday at the Boston opening of the 23rd Microsoft store. It will also appear Thursday at the Seattle and Bellevue Microsoft stores, as well as on the microsoft.com home page.

They're really hoping metro will be popular aren't they...

It's hardly any different to old windows logo. Just taken the wave out.
I think we can guarantee metro will be popular. Just have to look at sales in tablets and phones from apple/android to see where the market is going. Smartphones massively outnumber computers allready.

I'd take this over the mish mash branding of the old Microsoft any day. They've needed this cohesiveness for years now and it looks like they are finally getting it. Another half-assed attempt wouldn't have been good enough.

No. It's not the Windows logo.

This is the Windows logo.

That's the new windows 8 logo.
The new Microsoft logo is basically identical to the old windows logo.

It's basically showing its unification of all it's services. Into the new windows. Hence windows logo in the microft name, or at least that's my take on it.

Yeah that's what I don't like. They've just used the iconic Windows logo colour combination and slapped "Microsoft" next to it.

Old logo was corporately much better. The colours would be fine for the new windows logo, but it's a crap logo for the entire corporation.

Yeah. Sounds plausible, they're taking this new metro thing pretty seriously, convergence of Metro UI into everything Microsoft.

II expect it's becuase of the unification MS is pushing for. What is covered in w8, w8 covers all computers from phones to serves, it includes their services built into the OS be it outlook, skydrive or whatever.
And moving forward, Ms is clearly wanting true unification.

I'm trying to think, but off the top of my head cannt think of anyother examples other than apple.

Apple has the logo recgnition sowen up.
See an apple with a bite in it, you all know it's apple and what ever the product is, the apple logo is first and foremost. In fact do the I products even have any other logo. I suppose osx has a kind of logo.
That seems the right way round, you know the company not one product of said company.

Where Microsoft and android, have it the wrong way round, you now the windows logo or the android mascot.
Perhaps that's another reason they're doing this, everyone recognizes the windows logo as Microsoft anyway, so are trying to correct a mistake this been around for a fair few decades.
