Thanks to everyone especially Overclockers UK and Unclue Petey for all your help.

Well we have a final build as follows

I7 3930K overclocked to 4.8Ghz on RSA water block max temps under prime 78
X79-UP4 GigaByte motherboard.
2xGTX460 in SLI both overclocked by about 20%
32gb 1600 RAM in 8x4GB sticks to give max throughput.
Samsung 830 256 SSD in Sata III
2x 1.3TB Raid 0 SATA II HD's for data

All in a CPU only water cool in an old Antec 900 series case. 240 rad on the back external.

Took a long time to get things working and settled, but final scores on the doors are

PassMark 6780.8 score
3DMark11 8599 score

About a 30% increase on my OC I7 990x @ 4.67Gz.

Not much else I can do now as it is a video editing / picture editing and number crunching machine for the occasional game. Not after adding in 2x690 cards :)

2 690's, that's a tad mad :D

As far as I know, scaling with quad SLI is rubbish, but i'm happy for you to show me your results :)

LOL sorry "Uncle Petey" :)

No not going to put in two 690's, sticking with the SLI 460's. Adding 690's would be about the only thing I could do to make this system better other than ramp up the clock to 5+ Ghz.

Pictures will come soon.

Some piccies

Not the prettiest machine with the external rad, but at least it is exposed to cool air by an open window most of the time. I also tried to be good with the cable management and it looks clean.

Temps are quite good too.

Also noticed when I had only 4x4GB Ram in 4 out of the 8 slots it ran 1/2 the speed as to when I put in a full bank of 8x4GB ram showing the power of the QUAD memory channels of the X79 boards.

fixed it for you.
Unclue is the proper spelling.. :D

Very nice dude! Tbh though, with your budget you could have got a pretty slick case to stick all that in too :)

yeah could have but it was actually £660 I wasn't planning on spending until, the 990x died. The next round of upgrades will be two nice 24 inch monitors to replace the old 22inch HP ones I have.

your i7 990x died? I as as I'm looking to upgrade my 920 to a 6 core

not sure what happened. I swapped out an old P6T motherboard for a newer Asus one and the PC booted and stopped working after 30 seconds. Could never get the thing to boot again :(
