Gtx 670 RMA - repair or replace?

So, I've currently got my gtx 670 windforce out for RMA with gigabyte. Its only a few months old but it developed a problem with bad graphical artefacts in several games and benchies (I would guess at bad memory).
Now, even though the vendor (not ocuk) stated it would be sent to gigabyte for repair or replacement, I though as graphics cards were complex bits of kit you pretty much always got a replacement item, not a repair job....

I've just received an email from them saying the unit is repaired and they want my address to ship back. What should I do, I don't feel happy about owning a 'repaired' gtx 670 when it's so young. Thoughts?

If it is repaired, I don't see the problem. You still have a long time on your warranty to give you peace of mind if it does go wrong again.

if its as simple as replacing a memory chip, canter say it would phase me. i used to do that by hand :-)

they will likely have tested the card thouroughly.

Well thing is, at the time of purchase you most likely agreed to this being the case if anything went wrong, it's usually only covered for replacement in the first month/28 days iirc.

Cheers chaps. Doesn't seem to be an issue then? I've only ever had one faulty graphics card before ever (been lucky?) and I got a replacement that time not a repair, so just wondered what the 'norm' was.

How old is it exactly?

If its fixed and works as new it should be fine, if its still playing up and not performing how it should tell them you want a replacement?

It's 2 months old.

I had a thread about this card knocking around - ( "worst clocking gtx 670 ever" or something ) when I got it, and as I mentioned in that thread the other day, perhaps the reason it had such a poor boost is because it was always faulty/ on the edge.

Edit - heres the thread

I guess this is another reason I'd rather have a replacement than a repair, as it was a duffer when it comes to boosting/ overclocking. Not that I'm too fussed about that now as I'm running SLI (other card is an evga ftw 670) and I really don't need to overclock.

Ok, received the windforce 670 back from RMA repair this morning. I've yet to test it ( am nervous!), just wanted to pick brains on here for what the replaced component is. The repair form enclosed isn't very helpful, but details are

Reason- c12smt open
Error- o03 system hang up
Component- 10hb5-140670-10r CHIP Gtx 670 gk104-325-a2 NVIDI
Location - G1

So, with my limited knowledge this suggests it was the core (chip) at fault in some way rather than the memory. Is that right???

Ok. Just tested the card and it still has the same fault, at the same test points in max settings on the heaven benchmark. Not happy!

I was keeping cool, but I'm proper ****ed off now. What's the best course of action to take. There's no chance I'm sending this card away for 'repair' again. I either want a full refund or a brand new replacement. Where do I legally stand with this?

HELP!

This is worse than ever! Fired up Skyrim which was a game that would sometimes demonstrate problems. It's worse than before! Within about 10 seconds the framerate slows to a crawl and funky psychedelic lights flash everywhere, textures go all trippy etc. Difficult to grab a screen of the proper effect as it's all over the place but below is an example

Here are a few grabs from the heaven bench

In the one below the right hand third of the screen is all funky textures going wrong:

In this one below you can see the texture spikes coming off the top of the middle tower, and 5 other weird texture spikes coming off parts of the walls and from the ground.

This happens every time I run the test, so it's replicable.

Anyone know where I stand? I've contacted the original vendor (not ocuk) saying I'm not prepared to send it for 'repair' to gigabyte for a second time. The card clearly has a major problem, so I've said it's unacceptable and I'm demanding either:

1. A full refund, or
2. A totally brand new replacement Windforce 670.

Personally id have said it was the memory at fault there. Is your card overclocked out of the box? Mite be worth trying to run it at stock 670 settings

But like you id be wanting a refund or a new replacemednt.

This is with the card at stock. I think the windforce has a very mild oc compared to a reference card. To be honest I'm not downclocking anything. It's running at stock for this card as advertised, and it's borked.

The texture spikes look like bad memory I agree, but what it does in Skyrim is very odd. I really think the whole card is totally ****ed.

For what it's worth it also has a low asic quality score too - 78. Don't know if that's relevant though

I would kick off big time bud. That is a memory fault, as I get that when I push my memory to insane amounts (not stock like yourself).

Send them a polite email but state your problems and unhappiness.

Yeah. Have started the ball rolling. I've explained how I've fully tested everything against my other evga card, and sent screen grabs. I'm keeping it civil, but if they suggest I send it back for repair a second time, I will then kick off big time.

Anyone experienced anything like this before? Surely they wouldn't dare suggest a second 'repair'. The card is obviously a dud.

Ok guys, I need you help big time here! The vendor has tested the card using 3Dmark and unigine heaven, said they found no faults. I am fuming at this present time. Here is the reply:

"The card was tested again this morning using 3Dmark and again we were unable to locate any problems. Our technician has also ran another test using Unigine as requested by you. Again we were unable to find any artifacts or any other problems. Unfortunately we do not have a licenses version of Unigine inhouse to send you a full report. Nonetheless the card has been performing as expected and no issues were spotted and the temperature remained within limit.

3Dmark results can be found here

It's possible that the card might be overheating in your case or no sufficient power is supplied. I am attaching to this email our testing setup as well as GPU readings. As we are unable to locate any fault, we would have to send the card back to your delivery address. You will not be charged fro the collection, delivery, or testing on this occasion.

We would recommend that you check your other components to find the cause of the issue. This RMA is closed."
