Tottenham forward Clint Dempsey says he left Fulham in the summer because he did not feel appreciated by the club.

I'm a Spurs fan and already don't appreciate him, hope we get rid of him in January. Already he's trying too hard to be like Defoe, he's greedy but he can't shoot. Really don't know why we bought him.

He's had like one decent season at Fulham, it sounds like he's got a bit of an ego problem.

This.

He was big fish in a little pond and done well from it now he looks out of his depth. Still time left but looking like another player whose ego has took him further than his skills deserve.

Sadly, Sigurðsson has been worse. I really want to like Sigurðsson but his positioning and awareness is just terrible.

At the moment, Dempsey is our best option in that CAM/CF role.

He's done well there for 2-3 seasons, not 1. Second, what makes you think that? I think he's on track for another great season personally.

Honestly OP, I had a little chuckle at your post. Sure he hasn't started with the same form he had week in week out last season, but surely with him moving to another team it'd take him a little while to get used to the players around him. Honestly, 2 goals in 11 premier league apps isn't bad..

If you read the quotes, he clearly says that his "lack of appreciation" wasn't from the fans or chairman, rather "other situations" which we clearly don't know about, why that makes some people feel like they're in a position to comment I really don't know.

To date he hasn't spoken about Jol (as far as i recall), who he clearly had a major falling out with. For someone with a big "ego", that seems out of character doesn't it? ;)

Appreciation equals, other guys scoring quite a few goals every season and having a really ridiculously good season last time around... make more money than he did at Fulham. More appreciation means more money, and I hate to tell ya Mr-White, but you're certainly "appreciating" him more than Fulham were, if you like him or not ;)

He was probably on sub 40k at Fulham, and probably on 60k plus at Spurs. Also, he's had a bad start seemingly, different team, didn't really have a preseason AFAIK, ring rusty with a new manager, starting late with no preseason. See how he's doing by the end of the season.

I said in the summer he'd fail at a bigger club..... shame the move to Liverpool never happened :D

I just don't really think that Dempsey suits Spurs that well. He's more of a positional type player where as the rest of the Spurs team are all about pace and being very direct. When Spurs are in full flow or on the counter attack whenever I have watched him he appears to just get left behind a bit, only being effective on the followup or coming into the box late.

exactly this.

This is what you need, desparately, Adebayor he had his good games, and the other games when he couldn't hit a barn door, you need someone to arrive late in the box and take the shot. Modric rarely did that, Parker doesn't do that, Sandro doesn't do that. That is a CRUCIAL role that you are both overlooking as not being a good thing.

How many games, and how many titles have Chelsea won because Lampard gets the winner by doing exactly this? its the guy who makes the smart run unnoticed by everyone else, who gets the goal. Scholes for Utd(obviously much less so now but in his first decade, it was crucial to Utd and his game), for Barca you have Xavi, Cesc, Iniesta, Busquets, just about anyone there is capable of that role, City have Yaya/Milner, Liverpool HAD Gerrard for this.

It is a fundamental, crucial thing that players do, when everyone with pace simply bursts up the field, then either shoots or crosses, the when that shot or cross sucks or gets palmed out by the keeper or a weak clearance, its the guy late into the box that gets so many winners.

Thats exactly what he did for Fulham so often, and its EXACTLY what Spurs needed last season, when Bale took 762 shots either missing or hitting the bar, when you ran out of idea's, its a guy like Dempsey that would have got you winners during that spell of poor form.

Like I said though, he's had no preseason, was geared up to move to Liverpool, got frozen out, didn't play till he joined you and he's really not played an awful lot with Dembele has he? Dembele joined having been a part of Fulham's season while Dempsey didn't, Dembele came into the team match fit and in form, Dempsey didn't, its always easier to join a team match fit and with form, than without.

Also in comparing him to Modric, and the fact he offers you a lot more potential goals than Modric did... this was a player you guys loved, whose game was nothing to do with direct play and pace. A team full of players that are only about pace and direct play, is a team destined to fail.

Jol has said it was about money, we offered him a deal equalling our highest ever (£50k/week) but he moved on. Hope he flops. Dembele is ok though :p

Funny that, he got the winning goal against Utd :p

and against southampton, that's 6 valuable points.

he doesn't suit our system tbh. we should be going 4-4-2 and leave dempsey and sig as impact subs and i'm using the word impact loosely as sig looks to be a dud, should've let liverpool have him. wouldn't surprise me if we loan him out even with our bleak attack.

Anyone (apart from Jason Puncheon) could have scored that goal! :p

Dempsy is an odd one, played pretty well at Fulham, got above his station and has flopped a bit (just like Sig in the same team). Tempted to say its down to AVB and Spurs and not the player, though any player worth his salt should be able to integrate into a team.

Dembele can do that though. This isn't what Dempsey is all about. He's more of a link forward than an attacking midfielder.

Agreed I think the 'problem' is in that formation - an oldschool 4-4-2 with Bale and Lennon on the wings - it can be difficult to fit in a 'support forward' or whatever one wants to label them as. Parker or Sandro would be left very exposed if Spurs played a front 5 of Defoe/Adebayor/Bale/Lennon/Dempsey so realistically the only way Dempsey should be getting in the side is playing off a lone striker.

I suppose if one considers alternative formations bearing in mind what AVB did against Arsenal in the second-half there could maybe be a 3-5-2 possibility involving them i.e. Bale and Walker as wingbacks with Dempsey the furthest forward of the 3 central midfielders. But realistically should they be shaking things up to try and accomodate Dempsey?

I'm hoping now with the signing of Holtby that Dempsey will be warming the bench for the rest of the season.

who would you play up front now? that MR Defoe is out, and now if Dempsey play well in the next few games you come back here and say different story.
