Morning,
As some of you may know I'm busy collecting the parts for a new HTPC build. The focus remains on building something quiet but also performs well. Generally the rig will be used for watching movies, homework with gaming still being an important factor but not the primary concern.
Here are the parts I've chosen and have:
Processor: i7 3770k (I managed to get this relatively cheap)
Mem: Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 2 x 4gb
HDD: Crucial M4 256GB SSD
GPU: MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr III OC 2048MB
CPU Cooler: Scythe Big Shuriken 2 Rev B
Other items soon to be ordered:
PSU: Corsair 550 TX550M '80 plus bronze'
Cooling: Various Noctua fans
With regards the case, I originally opted for a Silverstone GD06. This gave me restrictions on things like motherboard, cpu cooler, graphics etc. However, I've just cast my eye upon the GD08, and...well... I'm in love.
Not only is the case more pleasing to the eye but it means I can now go for a full ATX board if necessary.
I've chosen the Scythe Big Shuriken 2 Rev B cooler. The GD08 means I can slap a thicker 120mm fan on top of it to increase airflow whilst maintaining a decent noise level. The GD06 meant having to remove the optical disc drive tray, which I didn't want to do and for the sake of a few cm in extra depth, I'm going for the GD08.
I was originally going to go for the Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe. From researching online I found that the Shuriken was compatible with it without fouling the memory of PCI-E slot. Great I thought, this'll be nice and easy. The only problem? Price.
Now that I've chosen the GD08, I don't have to go for an mITX or mAtx motherboard. The only stipulations are that it must have Wifi and be suitable for the needs I've mentioned above (as well as being compatible with the stuff I already have).
Does anyone have any suggestions at all on what I could go for? Anything around the £100 mark would be suitable. Happy to go a little higher if necessary. I like the looks of the Gigabyte boards and by all accounts they perform well.
Thanks for your help in advance.
David
