We have a thread for rating on games you completed.
But i feel this thread will really show the best of the best Of 2012.
Please give reasons for your choice

Would be nice if you put your Choice in Quotes so its easy to see it over the chatter

Ill Start

Sleeping Dogs
- Great Story
- Not to Long
- Great Missions & side Missions
- Nice to see Hong Kong as a setting rather than LC or SA
- Completed it over 6 times now & still go back for more.:D
- Basically Saints Row Game Bit More Serious

- Negatives
- Car Mechanics could been bit better
- Story should have gone both ways at the end
I want Sleeping Dogs 2!

Great idea for a thread. I loved Sleeping Dogs too, a great game, very pretty and engaging. Though my Game of The year Award goes too...

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

Good
  • Beatuiful Scenery
  • In Depth Environments
  • Easy to Learn, Hard to Master Combat
  • Gory as Sin
  • Addictive
  • NOT COD (OR BF3) :)

Bad
  • Still Undergoing Changes
  • A Few Server Issues

Dishonored for me.

Now on the last mission and have been really enjoying it over the past few days.

+ Wonderfully crafted world with stunning art direction and excellent attention to detail
+ Story and lore of the world are really well fleshed out
+ Open environments and multiple approaches to objectives
+ Fun powers

- Stealth mechanics aren't that great
- Really demands two playthroughs due to the way chaos is handled (not sure if this is a negative, but I've not used most of the powers due to trying to play with low chaos and kind of feel I missed out)

Difficult choice for me as there haven't been any games released this year that I've played and considered truly outstanding. The best game I've played this year wasn't released in 2012 so it needs a bit of head-scratching. I'd say probably:

Mass Effect 3

+More of the same, usual strong storyline and characterisation
+Character models are good
+Decent framerate, 75-120fps throughout
+Learnt some technical lessons from ME2 – no uncrypted config file, able to change mouse sens in menu etc, and I only got stuck in the terrain once (inside the geth mainframe thingy where I managed to fall off the steps)
+Reasonable game length, took me ~28h
+War Fleet adds a bit of focus to your questing in terms of (seemingly) tangible rewards, although I'm not sure how much difference it actually made in the end
+Ending was better than expected
+Levels are generally well designed

-Side missions are very uninformative, using cluster/planet names inconsistently, not updating when you have obtained an quest item (so you have to check and remember what you’ve picked up during scanning etc)
-Side missions are too easily broken (or require a lot of lame linear backward and forwarding focussing on a single mission at a time to avoid the risk of them breaking). Good example would be when I got access to Tchunka, I had one main quest and two side quests available on the planet. So, rather than constantly travelling back and forth to the citadel, I tackle all three missions in succession (leaving the priority mission to last to try and avoid missing out on the side missions). Problem is, when I had done them all and returned to the citadel to ‘cash in my chips’, I discovered that the Citadel was under attack and I could no longer complete one of the sidemissions. I know this type of thing can happen in RPGs but it is highly frustrating.
-Aside from London, the texture quality is poor for a 2012 game, it’s all a bit 2008. VRAM usage stayed under 750MB throughout – smells like consolitus.
-The Citadel doesn’t feel as expansive as in ME1, they’ve tried to streamline it I guess but for example only having access to the Human embassy is disappointing
-New characters don’t feel quite as strong
-Only being able to use two teammates at once sucks, seems a bit pointless amassing this big crew and then only going in a team of three, especially on the final push. I don't think I ever used James, EDI or Liana unless I had to.
-Few continuity holes, no idea how someone in my squad for the final mission were able to make it back onto the Normandy in time for the end cutscene (especially considering according to radio chatter they were all wiped out)
-The whole Paragon/Renegade thing seems a bit underused, I still don't really understand what affect it has on things other than giving you the odd mouse click in cutscenes or conversation options (which I nearly always have both options anyway)

The main reason this is GOTY for me I suppose is that despite being a 'let down' relative to the rest of the series, judged on merit it is still a good game and there wasn't much in the way of competition. My top 3 would include Sleeping Dogs and Far Cry 3, but I can't with good conscience rate them over ME3.

Copy and pasting smogsys, and adding a point of my own, mainly because I agree with you on everything. Amazing game. :P

Sleeping Dogs was a corker, came out of nowhere with no hype and was totally amazing !

Hitman Absolution also, absolutely loved it. :D

Borderlands 2

Positives
- great visuals
- lengthy game
- second playthrough feels challenging enough to be worthwhile
- strong classes
- top enemies
- loads of weapons

Negatives

- repetitive in places
- difficulty ramps up unexpectedly
- weapon levelling not in sync with character
- general weapon drops were poor compared to keys
- too reliant on chest keys to make it through the game

Using smogys but only because I totally agree 100%, added an extra point too

Arma II (Dayz Mod)
- Survial at it's best
- Great fun teaming up with other players
- Running away from Zeds
- On the edge of your seat moments
- MGT Server ;)

- Negatives
- Being shot by a bandit
- Buggy as hell
- Glitches like hell
- Asking over direct chat if someone is friendly and then getting shot when you meet them!!

Will i be going back for more - HELL YES

Dishonored

Despite not having completed this yet this would be my game of 2012.

No game since Thief 3 has made me get so frustrated at making the most basic of mistakes and getting spotted or someone finding a corpse etc.

Other games worth mention, Farcry3, after the disappointment of the second game farcry3 is a great success imo, with a great villian to boot :)

Mists of Pandaria, this is easily the game which has soaked up most of my time but i cant really list it as number one since its an expansion.

Easily the best expansion for WOW imo, the story telling, zones, levelling fluidity and range of things to do (yes even the dailies i love), blizzard just never fail to produce exceptional quality.

Dishonored for me, the world drew me in and I spent a good while playing it! Can't wait for the next game in the franchise.
