I saw this probably over ten years ago on late night TV and missed most of the first half, however, it kinda stayed with me and I simply must know what it was.
Ok, bear with me
I believe it was set in Australia and there was some kind of event that basically made almost the entire population vanish.
The main character was a white, middle aged bloke who ended up finding at least two other people (a woman and a black dude).
I remember one flashback scene where the black guy recalls his experience when the 'event' occurred; He was in a fight with a former friend in a stream/river and the other guy had got the best of him and was choking/drowning him when there was a flash (or something weird) and the guy just disappeared.
It turns out that all three survivors died at the exact moment the event struck, which somehow saved them.
The main character works out that the event isn't a one-off and figures out how to predict when the next will occur.
At the end of the film, the main character ends up in what can only be described as some kind of vision of heaven (I don't know, I can't remember it exactly), which consisted of an incredible vista of mountains/clouds/colours.
That's about all I can remember. Ring any bells with you?
