All the testing is done for both these cards running stock volts. Yes I do know what stock volts is!!! due to time constraints today I have only been able to run a couple of benchmarks but will add to these Monday morning with more game based stuff.

The CPU is 3960X at 5.1ghz.

Incidently I picked these benchmarks as a starting point as they are more GPU bottle necked than CPU. All tests are at 1050p and the sleeping dogs graphics settings are seen below.

Lets see how the cards Perform:

7950 at stock:

Unigine

Sleeping Dogs

7870XT at stock:

Unigine

Sleeping Dogs

7870XT Overclocked 1200 core 1800 mem:

Unigine

Sleeping Dogs

Oh and Vantage because I could not resist!!! getting a CPU score too!!! ( Not bad for closed loop water and ten seconds tuning;))

Like I say further results to follow but with stock volts on both cards the Overclocked 7870XT Overclocked is beating the 7950 at the moment on both synthetic and game based benchmarks.

Bargain ??? may well be.

Hi there

8 Pack excellent first review, glad to see when overclocked the 7870 XT can match a stock 7950, this makes them incredible value for money. :D

I look forward to see what the 7870 XT can do with some extra volts!! :)

is there any increase in temps and noise etc with clock increase or power usage / needs.

im new to all this so it maybe a basic question im asking?

I think the older versions of CPUZ for what ever reason would show all SBE chips as ES, also iirc the true 'ES' 3960X's only had a stock clock of ~2.8ghz, or at least the A stepping was.

The XT performs and clocks well, a shame its still going to be a hard sell when the on offer 7950's are hitting the £210 mark.

If i am going to spend £200 on a graphics card i think the extra bit of money for a 7950 makes much more sense.

Its good that an overclocked 7870xt can match a stock 7950 but the price difference is too small.

A 7870xt for £160-£170 then it becomes tempting.

Not at all as no real extra heart is added with this one as I did not add extra voltage. I know the forum is in shock with this let alone no sub zero cooling!!!

Dont worry cascade on 5770 tonight!!!

This is great news, but would like to see both with max overclocks to make a decision on which to buy. :)

How is the cooler on the 7870XT? Look's like my VTX3D 7970 stock heatsink which was cheap and loud. Changed it due to throttling when attempting overclocking. The 7870XT doesn't run as hot as the 7970/7950?

Thank's for the benchmarks! Would really appreciate if you can add some temps in. Cooling is quite important to me as the case I am putting the new card into isn't that well ventilated. Was going to get the 7950 with Windforce cooler as it looks similar to my Accelero. It's for my brother, he is using my old coolermaster case, which is quite quiet but needs fans to be loud to provide good enough cooling for GPU.

I am following up on this initial taster this week. I will include temps for you so you can see. MSI AB was recording temps well on the XT so I can use that. I never thought to note them to be honest be its a fair point.

The XT has an up rated dual fan cooler which is much better than the stock in terms of noise and cooling ability. Certainly the XT was quieter than the 7950 no doubt.

I am going to rag the guts out of them both dont worry about that one. The stuff I put on the site was a taster and done in a short period of time so users could get a feel for the new product. A follow up is a must I realise that.

So how many members on OCUK game at the resolutions shown in the benchmark (1680X1050)?

2560x1440 and 1920x1080 is what the majority of people use so it's mind boggling why these resolutions weren't used.

Enthusiasts maybe (like most on here)...I'd say the vast majority out there (general public) would still be sporting 22inch 1680x1050 monitors.

Looking forward to more threads like this and also some tips on how to get the best out of the hardware :)
