This is for a friend, who's played on my 7970 system and now wants to upgrade their machine, but doesn't have such deep pockets.

I was thinking maybe 7770 ?

Is he against going second hand?
You'll get a lot more for your money second hand, for instant:

HD6850 - £50-£60 (>7770)
GTX460 - £40-£50 (>7770)

For the £100 that would get you a HD7770 you could be fortunate enough to grab yourself a HD6950/70.

If he's totally against going second hand, then yeah. A 7770 at that res, turning down the settings will net an acceptable fps.

If he doesn't want to go second hand and wants the latest tech on a budget i can recommend a HD7770 OC as i bought one for my girlfriends pc. Its a Gigabyte HD7770 OC card from ocuk. They overclock very well with a bit of voltage. They also run very cool and use very little power. 1 6pin power plug is all you need. With a slight overclock it will surpass a 6850. At that res it should be able to run most games at high - medium settings. Aim for 1150 core or higher and 1250 on the memory. I picked up the 7770 OC when it was on offer for £90, if you ask in the customer services section maybe 5UB will sell it at that price to you. This is also in line with your budget of £100. :)

I can clock mine at 1300 core which surpassed 6850 performance.

Guys which Nvidia card would you recommend second hand that gives most bang for buck and which may actually be available used?

I doubt even with a tidy overclock the 7770 will surpass the 6850.
It might equal it?

Any chance you could possibly do a 3D11 run on your girlfriends PC?
I've done a run with a 6850 and managed 4k graphics score.

Yes im that bored, you owe me for this. :D

P5186 with AMD Radeon HD 7770(1x) and Intel Core i7-2700K Processor
Graphics Score 4833
Physics Score 8861
Combined Score 4830

Looking around at reviews and other HD7770 users i appear to have a card that is a average memory overclocker. Only able to get the memory up to 1250 but i see others getting up to and beyond 1500. Core was at 1290 memory at 1250. Memory is holding my card back from more. Just another 25-50mhz on the memory and this card will easily surpass 5k.

That's a good 20% quicker
A stock 7770 is equal to my overclocked 6850? (yours is about 20% quicker with about 20% overclock)

I'll be eating humble pie if you need me :D :D

No need to mate, i agree it is a bit of a shocker though. The HD7700 is a decent budget card, just make sure you get one that is not voltage locked.

I finished Crysis and Crysis2 with GTX550Ti at 1920x1080.

It was with DX9. DX11 + HR Texture pack will lower the fps but still playable.

I think 560Ti will be a bit better.

BTW CPU is Core i3.
