Powerlifting, where to start?

I'm a very competitive person and i've always done some sort of competitive sport at high levels throughout my life. I started hitting the gym last May and I'm really getting into it. I thought about competitive bodybuilding but I hate dieting down, or rather, love my food :D

I'd really like to get into some competitive powerlifting, but it all seems quite closed compared to the other sports I've done.

Any idea where to start? I had a look on the GBPF calendar, trying to enter a novice/junior competition, but none suit my exam schedule this year. Or they're in Dover (I'm in Manchester). The only competition that suits my exams this year is "Lancashire and Cheshire Powerlifting Championships" but I've no idea if this is for experience lifters only and i'd make a fool of myself, or if I can even enter. Does it need some sort of qualification?

Any advice would very much be appreciated :)

I made the move into powerlifting last year and did my first comp this month. Most comps you can enter as long as you're a member of the federation. I believe the championships require you to qualify at regional comps.

If want to be competitive you'll still need to watch your weight. Icecold and Djdom have been competing for a while now and have a wealth of experience.

It's pretty damn hard work lifting heavy ass weights each and every session, but if you enjoy it you'll take to it well.

^ Sometimes "championships" are just a name tacked on to regional comps. Even then, you can still compete as a guest at the digression of the organiser as far as I know.

Thanks guys :)

A training log is definitely something I need to do, I'll start it now.

From what I've gathered so far, I just need to be a GBPF member and then I can enter competitions?

LiE - Ah, I thought that may be the case, there are some next month but I'm not sure that's enough time to prepare. Maybe I should enter for the experience anyway, I'll have a think :)

My weight is fairly consistent, I'm 6"1 and around 85kg at the moment which would put me in the 90kg and under category? I just meant I hate getting down to single figure bodyfat percentages :D

I've done prep for national swimming competitions before now but I guess this will be totally different so I'll be asking a few questions when I get closer to comp time :)

Technically that would put you in the 93kg class, which is where I'm moving up to.

But yes, get your GBPF membership, and it's worth firing off an email to the comp organiser just to check that you can lift. Explain that it's your first comp and I'm sure they'll make you feel very welcome.

Ah, I was looking at the pre 2011 classes! :o

I sent an email just now to the comp organiser in May, I'll update my log with the outcome.
