Hi

I currently have 6GB of tri-channel RAM (3x2GB) that I bought back with my i7.

6GB simply isn't enough now, I use 80%~ of it almost all of the time and when I open something else the computer starts to hang.

My motherboard is the GA-EX58-UD3R, which only has four RAM slots.

Would I be okay getting something like: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 16GB CL9 w/4x 4GB

I don't really care too much about the performance itself, I just want the capacity. I'd rather have too much than too little, I see most people only recommend 8GB for builds etc.

Any downsides to using 16GB?

I'd say 8GB is the sweet spot for gaming (and most things really) currently, I have 16 myself but that's purely for the work I do on my PC, the other gaming systems in my house all have 8GB :)

It's a mixture really, I might be running a couple of different games at once, encoding a video, having quite a lot of programs running in the background too (iTunes, Skype, Steam, Origin, Antivirus, etc). I do also use Fireworks from time to time and things like that.

I keep hitting the 6GB 'wall' so I definitely want at least 8GB, but I bet I could use that up as well, it wouldn't surprise me!

Though I do wonder: does this mean you don't mind using 4 (or 2) sticks of RAM, for 16GB, though your platform is triple-channel compatible for whatever it may be worth?

Yes, it's triple channel compatible.

Anyway I now have 4x4GB sticks and there's a huge improvement so I'm very happy.
