Really surprised by the results in the latest GTX 770 reviews. The old 7970 Ghz is not only beating the GTX 770 in benchies but also win some lose some with the much more expensive GTX 780 :eek:

I can see why AMD aren't in a rush to launch anything new just yet..

also nowhere near being in the same market segment as the GTX 770 and 7970GE.

Cherry picking the benchmarks there a little... :p

Based on that anandtech review, the GTX770 is very slightly faster than the 7970GE overall (102% the performance at both 2560 and 1920 resolution). Being different architectures there are bound to be some fairly large differences between the cards in some games. As always, the key is to pick the card that performs best in the games you plan to play.

Overclocking headroom is also worth considering; the 7970GE and the GTX 770 seem to be getting around a 10% overclock, whereas 20% is more typical of the GTX 780. Power consumption and noise also favour the Nvidia cards at this point.



The 7970GE is still holding up very well, mostly due to the driver-level improvements AMD churned out in the latter half of last year, but the outlook isn't nearly so rosy as your carefully selected benchmarks would imply.

Not cherry picking, (Read thread title) chose those to specifically show that the old 7970 Ghz (A £299 card) can actually beat the GTX 780 (£550), that should not be happening.

The 7970 Ghz is way faster overall than the 770, I'm not sure how you can come to any other conclusion tbh :p

a match for the 22 month old 7970@1Ghz in most games.... depending on the game depends on which card is faster, anand said as much in its own review


although

with the all BS about the titan and titan LE cards pricing - the 770 has come in right where the 670/570 and 470 launched at

Not particularly surprising - as I said, they run on different architectures and will respond differently to different software applications. It isn't surprising that a 7970GE would beat a 780 in the odd game or two (just as it isn't surprising that the 780 would have a 50%+ advantage in the odd game or two).

:confused: Well, you come to that conclusion by taking an average of the gaming scores - just as anandtech did and summarised in their review. In doing so you see a very slight lead for the 770 in the suite of benchmarks tested. It isn't exactly rocket science...

So - unless you want to consider purely synthetic compute benchmarks the evidence suggests the 770 is evenly matched with, or very slightly faster, than the 7970GE.
 
It looks like a tie to me overall, 770 vs 7970 ghz. Maybe it slightly favours the 770 but that's a pretty good result given the 7970 ghz is at stock and we all know how well they overclock.

A good review from anand though as usual.

Nvidia also appear to have caught up, at least in pure fps with AMD in bf3 which was a surprise, though AMD don't have any stutter problems in that title so i guess that is something that should be considered.

Indeed, this is how i see it.

GTX770 just about does it, only just, some go to the 7970, some go to the 770. However, the 7970 yields amazing results through overclocking.
 
I thought I would grab the other bench results you missed Boom. Seems unfair to just show those games/benches. This saves it looking extremely biased and gives potential buyers the full picture :)

What I would really like to see is a "best case" HD7970 overclocked to say 1250/6800 thrown into the benchmark results.

How close would this get to a GTX780 stock, specifically at 5760x1920 (3600x1920)?
 
So,its basically around the same speed as the HD7970GE which has been around since June last year,costs around the same and comes with less games too. Meh.

Its also quite weird how many reviews don't seem to compare it with GTX670 cards,which were already cheaper or a similar price for the last few months and many of which are pre-overclocked and are already GTX680 level.

Edit!!

BTW,almost of the GTX770 cards do not come with the reference cooler too,and the latter is listed as an advantage by many of them over the competition.

What would it prove

If you are going to overclock one you should overclock the other.

I have seen some of 8 Packs benches using a GTX 680 that beat any single off the shelf GPU by a mile, but what does it prove for normal use (apart from getting 8 Pack another record).:)

It would answer my question of whether a GTX780 is worth it over a highly clocked HD7970 for my resolution.

It just simply adds more data to the picture (just like we know a overclocked GTX780 can match or exceed stock Titan performance), which surely can't be a bad thing?!

The 4GB 770's could be good value considering some of the Ghz edition 7970's are at similar price points, you gain an extra GB of vram and Physx which is very nice in Metro Last light it has to be said.

Still think the GTX 760 ti will be the diamond in the rough when it comes to price VS performance. It should performance close to a GTX 680 but cost way less...

You would need 3 of the 4gb GTX 770s to bring the extra vram into play and that would be at 5760 * 1080.
 
Well, while the performance seem generally on par "now", for the same price, the 7970GE will last for longer due to higher vram and memory bus. The 4GB model of the 770 would price at extra £30-£40 extra or something, making them more expensive than the 7970GE (if not already is, considering you have to cherry pick same brand/model to find cheaper than 7970GE price).

To be honest, it is very poor-show and short-sighted on Nvidia's part for not making 4GB of vram as default for 770. When the consoles are out, the vram usage will no doubt increase by a fair margin, and quite honestly...2GB of vram could become a limitation even for 1920 res sooner than people might think.

Just curious...if given the choice (with the pricing remain the same), would people be more interested in the higher stock clock, or 2GB more of vram?
