Crossposting from the GFWL marketplace thread:

Unless someone cocked up, we might now have a date for when GFWL is going down for good from the Age of Empires page on xbox.com.

Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down. Please visit the Age of Empires Online forums for additional details.

Might be an idea to put together a list of games that use GFWL and might not get it patched out since we now have less than a year to play them. Bulletstorm and Dark Souls just took a jump up my to play list. Oh crap, and Dawn of War 2 as well.

Somebody over at neogaf already made up a list:
Games whose online facilities and achievements will die July 1, 2014--some of these may no longer be able to be activated at this point and thus will be DEAD DEAD:
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon – Enhanced Edition
Blacklight: Tango Down

Dead Rising 2
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
DiRT 2
Dirt 3

F1 2011

FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage
FUEL
Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City

I'd be surprised if games like GTA and Fallout werent patched.

You can already play Fallout without GFWL and there's a mod that gets rid of it altogether. GTA is probably the biggest game to be affected but given rockstar's attitude to the pc in recent years, who knows what they'll do.

Why is there expectation that they wont get patched out when GfWL dies?

Who's going to pay for it?

Very true! I would stay off the forums for months if Steam ever shut down, can you imagine the amount of threads!? I've seen 3 this weekend just for GFWL!

However, earlier posts were with regard to the marketplace, and not GFWL itself..

Oh, and you could add the Batman games to that, I know that Arkham City uses GFWL

GFWLWL is the main reason why I don't bother with Dead Rising 2, GTA IV or Fallout 3 tbh :/

Both Batman games and Bioshock 2 are supposedly having GFWL stripped out amongst other things being done to them like having achievements added. Also Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is definitely having it removed.

Pay for what sorry?

Sorry, I think I might have misunderstood you. I assumed you meant the games would be patched to keep working once GFWL goes down. Working on those patches would take time and money.

Naaah I was more worried that they might stop working altogether - it shouldnt happen, but the OP alluded to only having a year to play them - perhaps he just meant the MP portion!

Some of them need you to sign in before they'll start for the first time. Those games will be permanently unplayable unless they're patched. But yes, I did go a little overboard. In most cases it's just the online stuff that'll be unusable like multiplayer and achievements.

Gears of War is missing from that list, and it affects more than just multiplayer, you can't even save singleplayer progress without GFWL.

Anyhow to be on the safe side it looks like there's a few games I better get cracking with if I can find the time.

Hopefully get confirmation tomorrow as MS has a press event at Gamescom - I assume a journo will ask about this!
