D5 pump/res combo - will it fit in a Corsair Carbide 540 case?

Hi all, I have searched and could not find the answer to this.

I have a D5 combo pump/res bought from OCUK:

Currently it is installed in a 650D case. I am planning a transfer of the existing build into a Corsair Carbide 540 which will allow a better rad setup (360 + 240) and more rear space and also expand the loop a bit with the addition of a second 780 for folding.

This is the case:

Does anyone know if I will be able to fit my pump/res combo in the 2 drive bays this case comes with. Looking at it, it seems the I would have to mount the pump/res combo sideways. Not sure if this is possible? Would like to avoid having to buy another D5 with separate res and TOP if I can.

Thanks for your advice.

Thanks guys. That's reassuring. In terms of the D5 pump, how many rads/blocks can it support. Ultimately I will probably end up with a 360, 240, CPU block, 2 x GPU blocks and an external rad if possible (probably another 360 or a 420). Will I need 2 pumps?

It could probably handle it depending on the layout and other restrictions in your loop, but I think I'd rather run a couple of pumps in serial to keep the flow rate high and provide some redundancy if one one of them went pop.

Ed: Without the external rad, one pump is fine.

One of the guys with more experience with bigger loops can probably give you a better answer :)

Ok thanks guys. It may be simpler to go for an XSPC dual D5 res/pump combo. Would enable some space saving and also I am not sure where I would mount another D5/TOP within the case. Looked at the Corsair 540 again and I couldn't see any pre-made holes in the rear for tubing. Would be a shame to have to cut it.

If you want a second pump for redundancy and a little added pressure you could always throw one of the smaller standalone type pump units in.

I think having the PC on its "side" is the best way. You just need to make sure that you have enough pump length to facilitate an easy bleed.

I have just bought the same case and am getting Saturday delivery on it tomorrow. I also have the same pump res combo, so I will let you guys know how it went, let me be the guinea pig :)

Awesome thanks Weevil. Mine is arriving today but probably won't get a chance to build until weekend. I am thinking of placing a 240 rad at the top, 360 front (both of which are thinner AX XSPC parts and a Phobya 200 rad at the bottom if I can make it fit.

The only other problem I can think of is where to put my fan controllers. I will have 6 x Corsair 120s for the front rad, 4 x 120s for the top rad and a 200mm for the bottom rad. Also a rear case fan. That makes 12 fans and no real slots to place the controllers as the pump/res combo will take both slots.

Yea, I have no other fans in my case, everything else is passive for me, i have 1x 240 rad loop covering my GPU and CPU, I basically use watercooling to reduce noise, I don't OC that hardcore.

If you want the fan controllers looking pretty and easily accessible then they'd have to go into the drive slots. I'm sure something can be fashioned on the "window" side of the case, there is a **** load of room in there after all.

Really disappointed at the XPSC dual bay res/pump combo. The D5 pump is fine but while disassembling it today to transfer to the Corsair 540, noticed the edges of the res are warped and it was leaking from the top and sides. Very slowly (less than a drop a day by the looks of it, but still). Had it less than 6 months so will be RMAing this. Still tempted to get a different top/res. Not sure what though.

The case is big but have hit a little snag with fitting a 360 at the front and a 240 at the top. They touch so will need to mod the thread holes. Also the bottom right hand drive slot is a little too close to the rad ports. Other than that, great case.

Yea,

I've just finished mine. Only issue I've faced is housing the Res/pump in the 2 cd drive bays. There were guide rails within the entire cage, which stopped it from getting in. So I had to remove the actual cage. Now it doesnt sit flush. When I can be arsed I will bodge something so it stays flush.

Well done Weevil. Case looks great doesn't it. I have decided to go for completely different pump/res combo as I now have lost faith in the XSPC res. I have put my 2 fan controllers in the bay slots now. Will show pics when done. I have cocked up with my SLI link so have to create or buy a new one. Making another thread to ask for advice on it.

I was looking at this case as well, but eventually decided to wait few weeks for NZXT 530.
I was planing to go for XSPC bay reservoir and D5 - not a pre-assembled combo tho.
Now I am not sure.
Maybe I just worry to much.
By the way, Corsair 540 is a big case, so you should be able to put a 250mm tube reservoir there with your D5. They look nice and are much safer imho, if you put them on bottom of the case.
