AMD Radeon R7-260X R9-270X and R9-280X review

Interesting review, I would have liked to see the HD 7970 retested on the latest drivers as I think it would have been a dead heat with the 280X

So 280X is as fast or faster then a GTX 770 for a good chunk less....

From the three reviews I have just looked at the 280X does not seem to overclock that well reaching around 1150mhz on the core.

Is this enough to beat an overclocked GTX 770 ?

Interesting to see them turn TressFX off for Tomb Raider and run Bioshock with that crappy custom DDOF. If they had TressFX on and used the bioshock normal Ultra preset the 280x would have lead the 770.

I don't like what they appear to have done with the overclocking/power limit though. Looks like you might have to find a way to get round that to properly overclock. Looks like they might be following the Nvidia way which is never good to see.

Tbh I do not see much difference on the 280X vs 7970Ghz considering that new drivers will give that 2-3 fps more to the 7970.

And can see clearly this with the 270X. Has 1280 shaders compared to 1792 the 7950 has, less VRAM and smaller bus width, and is 1-3 fps faster than the 7950.

Consider that the clock is higher (1005 to 880 the 7950) which means every single 7950 can beat it fair and square without any serious overclocking, neither voltage tweaking! (at least most can achieve 1000 without voltage tweak)

Excellent spot !

I noticed this at the end of the reviews

"That said perhaps the current R7970 / GHz owners are on the lookout for something called the R9 290 and 290X eh ? That product under codename Hawaii will be released real soon. So stay in touch as that card series will drive performance towards a whole new level for AMD. Yes Sir - the best has yet to come!"

There's no indication of what the voltage was or anything unfortunately. Its the same chip as the 7970ghz so actually as long as there's voltage control it will overclock just as well. Afterburner probably needs an update im guessing.

That's what I figured, as I said earlier it would be interesting to see a 280X up against a HD 7970 using the same clocks and drivers.

I also think now would be a good time to snap up a cheap HD 7970 while they are still on the shelves.

Agreed. :)

You understand these things better than me, if this was a HD 7970 review would this be a poor result for clocks and volts.

I tripped over this in the R9 discussion thread on oc.net

Without knowing the asic rating of the card it doesn't mean much Kap. Low asic cards require lots of voltage. It looks to me that as with ghz edition cards they're mainly low asic cards so they will need 1.25-1.3v to get the most from them.

If you look at the XFX card in that review it scores lower than the 7970ghz. Lol something is definitely amiss there as its clocked faster than the 7970ghz. XFX cards have always sucked though so its no surprise to me.

The only difference from a 280x vs 7970ghz is a 20mhz bump in core clock and a small memory overclock. Nothing else has changed.

Anyway...

Never thought id see this but the 280X got a gold award from H. :D
