Posted here instead of CPU section as it's more related to overclocking.

Nothing like smacking a 3 week old cpu with a hammer to liven up a dull Tuesday afternoon! No wonder my wife always tries to find stuff to stop me getting bored (oo-er)!

Get it in a vice - I used electrical tape on the jaws to try to avoid marking the IHS:-

Black adhesive scraped off with a cash card (always useful to have if you kill the cpu) and the core cleaned:-

Inside of the IHS cleaned - you don't have to go mad removing the adhesive on the inside - just clean it off the mating faces:-

CPU dropped into the socket:-

Cool Laborotory Ultra applied to the core and a smear on the inside of the IHS - this stuff is weird and a bugger to apply - it's essentially liquid metal:-

IHS remounted and locked down with the socket hold down plat and a pea sized amount of Gelid GC Extreme - remember to orientate the IHS the right way but it'll be obvious when you try to lock down the plate!:-

Was it worth it? Well, I didn't kill the cpu so that answer might have been different, but here goes:-

That's a whole 25c lower than before. Admidtedly peaks were recorded when at 1.3v but still

Right, lets bump the voltage and see what we can squeeze out of this bad boy :-)

Nice result! I don't have the sack to do it myself, so I enjoy watching other people delidding expensive chips.

well done but you only needed to apply it to the die,not the underside of the cap aswell

and put liquid pro ontop of the cap instead of paste, will reduce temps further, but good job nevertheless:D

theres no real right or wrong way to do it,all you have to be wary of is the line of resistors down one side of the die,you don't want any liquid pro to get onto those

Nice, another 5 giggles chip! I didn't bother putting CLU on the IHS either, just some pK-3 which is my new fav tim. I went with the razor method, just bring myself to batting the chip with a hammer. Might try it on my next chip though….

The IHS does go back on, you just hold it in place while putting the ZIF bracket down (the little lever). Look at the second to last pic with the blob of paste on top. :)

Getting itchy hands about delidding my 3770K... Damn you.

Can you do this, but not put the IHS back on?
So the heatsink touches the die directly.
You can but you will need a naked die mounting kit. Ek produce one for waterblocks, unsure as to wether there are any that work with air coolers. Theres a risk of crushing the die if you use a conventional bracket.

The hair dryer method does seem the safest option. As stated above, i too would happily pay someone to delid mine as id be too scared of messing it up. Got an inkling that this chip could be pretty ok if it wasnt for it's very high temps.

Nice job. I've done two 4770k's. Both Hammer/Vice method.

My first one died after a months use. I narrowed it down to using a bowed block on the unglued IHS cause the IHS to bow putting uneven pressure on the die, cracking it subsequently killing my motherboard in the process :(

So I bought as new mobo and cpu, and delidded all over again! :D
Now I'm running direct-to-die with a EK-Supremacy +naked ivy mount.

The temp differences on d2d are absurdly good. I dropped 40c~ under loads.
