That's a healthy number I think its because more & more console gamers are moving onto PC when they see the lower games costs & superior overall experience vs next & current gen consoles ;) plus the PC is so versatile it can do anything & everything :p

If it can do $22b in 2013 with all those trashy games imagine what will happen when/if they actually make some decent PC games

Good news for PC Gaming. Those figures aside it's interesting to watch the Steam player base rising constantly. Seems to be about 1 million players a year recently hitting 7 million.

I am a big supporter of Steam but I am finding it concerning that PC Gaming and Steam are now seemingly synonymous.

Just me with the foil hat on?

not supprised this is happening after the cost of the ps4 and xbox one consoles and games.

was bound to happen in the end as PC tech has always been getting better and cheaper. Although saying that if pc gaming takes off again we will see prices rise, get your new rigs in before the prices rise.

At least the guys in charge at Valve and therefore Steam appear to have the interests of PC gamers at heart. They don't have shareholders to make profits for and they don't think that all PC gamers are dirty pirates.

I think we are in safe hands at the moment, at least while Gabe is in charge.

I agree with you that the increasing market share of steam could be a problem, we could end up in a similar monopoly to the ones on console. While people give a lot of hate (some deservedly so) to the platforms by other publishers ie. Origin Uplay etc, it does help keep a varied market.

It's a real concentration risk alright but just be glad it isn't EA!

Gabe and co. have already proven themselves more than trustworthy in this regard (not to mention genuinely contributory to PC gaming as a whole) but what happens when Gabe's gone? Who takes over? I'd love to believe all their staff were as altruistic but it goes against human nature (and business in general). Somebody will be calculating how much they could make if they start charging for Steam.

At the end of the day, I'm just glad that Gabe left his spectacularly well paid job at microsoft to make games instead. What they have achieved is astonishing. Next the Steambox and possibly even a quasi-replacement for Windows?

I love my PC, its not had as much love as it should have had recently is all.

I am going to invest in a whole new rig this year as well, I have not put nearly enough time into my PC in the past couple years as I used to do.

I think steam are intrested in making money just like everyone else, they have just done a great PR job because everything they do is positive but when Ubisoft/EA/MS try the same practices they get shouted down.

Its amazing really.

Im not saying i dont use steam (i have done for 10 years now) but they are not in it for us they are in it for making money by the ton and if you dont think that you are deluded.

Steam didn't start as a way for Valve to make money. It was to give their customers a better experience than was currently available. It's that basis of providing gamers with a better experience that's helped it grow into the money machine it is today.

If Valve had any interest in making lots of money then they'd have just carried on pumping out Half Life sequels and not even bothered with Steam in the first place.

It's the attitude of giving paying customers a better experience than pirating games that Valve have grown Steam into what it is today.

If they were in it for the money alone then they'd have floated Steam by now or sold it to EA. Apparently EA offered a billion dollars for Steam a few years back.

Hopefully Gabe has a clause in his will that prevents the Steam to EA or Ubisoft.

Funny, I'm in the same position myself. Rarely played over the last few years, not really bothered, haven't upgraded for 5 years etc etc but since the new year getting right back into things, already upgraded 90% of my aging PC (GPU left) and actually look forward and enjoying the world of PC gaming again! :D
